28 Days on Ocean Avenue: The Real Amityville Murders A big Colonial-style house sat on Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, with a statue of the Virgin Mary out front and a little sign on the lawn that said High Hopes. The DeFeo family had lived there since 1965. On a Wednesday night in November of 1974, the oldest son walked into his usual bar and asked his friends to come back to the house with him. What they found put 112 Ocean Avenue in the New York Times. A few years later, the same house became the star of a book and a movie sold as a true ghost story, and the man who tore that story down had a front-row seat in the courtroom.
