My Hero Academia Season 2 Ep.13 Review

************************************Spoiler Alert************************************

This article contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Season 2 Ep.13 so if you have yet to see it and do not want any particulars spoiled then please go watch it first.

The Overview

This weeks episode brings a couple things to us, are heroes are recognized in public, we get a new opening/ending, and hero names.

Opening and Ending

Season 2 episode 13 marks the use of a new opening and ending Sora ni Utaeba (If I Sing in the Sky) performed by amazarashi, and Datte Atashi no Hero (Still My Hero) performed by LiSA.

“It’s Time To Pick Some Names”

The meat of the episode if focused on the concept of the students picking their hero names. Names that could possibly stick with them the rest of their careers. Now this is such a simple concept but it brings so much to the table, and it allows for great levels of character building. In particular we get to see how several characters idolize former heroes, or have been thinking about their hero names since they were really young.

The thing I really enjoy about it is how Midoriya decides on his hero name of Deku. The silly child hood nickname/insult that Bakugo has for him. Now on the surface to most people this seems like a bad decision, after all why would anyone want an insult as their hero name? But it plays back to Season 1 where Uraraka tells Midoriya that the name would be a good name for a hero.

Now the second part of the episode are heroes must choose a hero agency to intern with. Some of them have recommendations, and others do not but everyone is eligible to apply for certain agency partnered with the school. Of course the big deal is that despite doing so well Midoriya did not get a request, until one comes in last minute, and it is All Might’s old home room teacher.

The Wrap up

As this series continues I find myself constantly enjoying it, the great balance of humor, drama, and action keep the story always entertaining. Even an entire episode with no action, thrills, or adventure manages to build up the characters, move the story, and be genuinely entertaining. I highly recommend this series to anyone, and this episode was another success.
