Welcome. My name is Danish Bhatti. I’m an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Sciences at University of Nebraska Medical Center, and I have the pleasure of having Professor John Bertoni MD PHD, the Director for Parkinson’s Disease Program, with us today to discuss an important topic about nutrition and Parkinson’s disease. John Bertoni: Well, yes, we are co directors of the Parkinson’s Disease Clinic now. So it’s a pleasure working with you. And as you know, we’re into some important research about nutrition and Parkinson’s disease. Danish Bhatti: That’s right. So I have trained with you as a movement disorder fellow and I’ve been working with you for the last five years and I know that you’ve always paid attention to nutritional status and vitamins of your patient with Parkinson’s disease. And I’ve seen your patients do very well with their Parkinson’s disease for 20-30 years and still walking to clinic and coming regularly. And I’ve always tried to figure out what are those things that I can replicate and have my patients have similar outcome. Danish Bhatti: Welcome John. It is another episode of Movement Disorder podcast where you share the stories that the patients have taught you, with us. What story would you like to share with our listeners today. John Bertoni: Well I think we can call this one Paying Attention to Details. Danish Bhatti: Paying attention to details. That’s interesting. So tell us the background of this story. Where were you when this episode happened, in what setting and what was going on around that time. John Bertoni: Every so often, we have to renew our skills in CPR and there’s basic CPR and now we call life support. So it was my turn. I was at the V.A. (veterans administration hospital) I figured it’d be easy at the V.A. because is not a big line over there. Danish Bhatti: So V.A. is a Veterans Administration hospital. John Bertoni: Right. Danish Bhatti: And the CPR will be the Cardiopulmonary resuscitation of basic life support. John Bertoni: Yes. Danish Bhatti: And where were you in your career? Danish Bhatti: Hi John. It’s a pleasure to have you here again to talk about some of your interesting cases and you know I learned a lot talking to you every week about these cases and I hope other people can also share my enthusiasm for these cases. John Bertoni: Well thank you. I find that I’ve learned the most from the patients I say if you listen if you pay attention. Danish Bhatti: I agree. So which patient would you be telling us about today? John Bertoni: Well this is going to be a surprise. I’ll tell you about the patient and see if you can figure it out on the way wherever he’s listening. Danish Bhatti: Can you also give me a context of when you ran into this patient? What were you doing at that time? John Bertoni: I was at the University of Michigan Medical Center, my first year of a residency in neurology. Today we’re doing an innovative podcast where we will blend in a lecture on Tourette’s syndrome along with a podcast with a question submitted to me from the course participant in movement disorder online course from Pakistan. Danish Bhatti: So I will go through the slides as I mentioned before and whenever the questions come up I will ask the audience presence the questions. Let me introduce who is present with us today. I have Professor John Bertoni MD PHD who is a professor of neurology and has been doing Parkinson’s disease for over 20 years but is an expert in all different movement disorders. We have Dr. Amy Hellman who is the director of Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence and an Assistant Professor in department of neurology at UNMC. We have Dr. Seier who is Assistant Professor just joined us from University of Oregon and we have Reagan iske who is a case manager who manages all our movements disorder cases and we have our movement disorder fellows Dr. James Shu who is a second year fellow in movement disorders and Dr. David Whittney who is a first year movement disorders fellow.
