I’ve had the pleasure of working with my guest on this episode so I have firsthand experience with how thorough, thoughtful and professional she is. She’s another terrific under-30 entrepreneur that I’m proud to be featuring. Christina Hunte is the owner and lead marketing strategist of Kreativ Edge, a business she founded after an unfortunate experience in a job she had not long after completing university. Christina talks about the one Bajan owned company that influenced her tremendously, her approach to marketing and how her intrigue with psychology gives her business its Kreative Edge. On this episode, I’m talking to the owner of Artist Made, a fine arts-based business. Shanika Grimes is a young woman who is full of life and personality but she’s also full of practical know-how and drive to create business success.  After operating from a rental property Shanika bit the bullet and got the financing to build her own studio, completing the project before age 30. Artist Made operates from the St. James, Barbados studio where she teaches art classes and conducts art camps but also offers Artist Made branded bags and other products. But a lot of her income is earned from custom projects, especially murals.  Shanika is incredibly sober about what it takes to succeed in business as an artist. You'll find out how she made the decision to take up art as a career in the first place and why it became so important to create a viable business out of it. You'll enjoy this! So just like that, the world has changed. The new coronavirus, COVID-19, caught us all off-guard didn’t it? Many brands and businesses all over the planet including Barbados are in a lurch right now.  So this episode is a little different. First I’ll share some perspectives from a few of my previous interviewees to hear what COVID-19 means or has meant for their businesses. Then I'll talk about what brand marketers should keep in mind now as a result of this global pandemic.

Jasmine Evelyn, the Founder of Mindful Movement Physiotherapy and Yoga Practice is my guest on this episode of Backstage with Bajan Brands. I've been following this young physiotherapist on Instagram for about a year now. A few things appeal to me. She has a background in dance, which I have, she practises yoga, which I do, she specialises in physiotherapy for pelvic health, which I find fascinating, and she just really seems to enjoy doing what she does.   This is the first time that I’m interviewing a guest via Skype and of course it’s because I’m practising physical distancing as a result of COVID-19, so if the quality is a bit wonky at times I apologise but there’s a whole lot to learn here so stick it out and listen to the end.

They make cheese in Barbados?! That’s the response my next guest on the podcast gets when she shows up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at international cheese events. That’s the response she got from me when I first sampled her products at a very popular all-inclusive event during Barbados’ Crop-Over festival 4 years ago. Andrea Power isn’t shy about her love for dairy. She grew up milking cows with her dad, who was the consummate DIY guy, always culling things together to make something new. So it’s probably no surprise that his daughter’s love for a little experimentation landed her on a product that has now morphed into the Hatchman’s Premium Cheeses brand.
