In the wake of Liverpool's failed title chase in 2013-14, many fans and pundits pointed to their captain's infamous gaffe in their match against Chelsea as the reason for their demise. He's been blamed nearly exclusively ever since, by both friend and enemy alike. History and psychology, however, would recommend against that approach.</p>
