During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government implemented a rule that prevented states from removing people from Medicaid. But following the end of the public health emergency at the end of March 2023, states began the eligibility redetermination process. Since then, more than 19 million people have lost their Medicaid or CHIP coverage.
