We are back! After a long break, we are delighted to open up Season 4 with both new and returning voices, Raheem Mirza and Akhil Shah. This week, you're in for a whole lot-a graduate gold. These wonderful guests take us through the practical must-dos of starting a business, eye opening discussions around men's skincare and mental health, as well as incredibly handy insights into the world of investment. These two really know a thing-or-two when it comes to Grad-ding Life by the Horns.  * Having both landed esteemed roles as Rotational Graduates at St James' Place and since progressing into careers surrounding Responsible Investment and Corporate Finance Analytics, Akhil and Raheem ooze knowledge, mentorship capacity and brilliance in financial wellbeing. Alongside the busy corporate lifestyle, Raheem founded Ra. Skincare in 2020 after studying Medical Science and experiencing the stresses of city life, and was shortly joined by Akhil, who shared many frustrations regarding the complexities of skin brands for men. Together, they are advocates for breaking down the stigmas of men's skincare and beautifully draw the parallels with men's mental health, driven by their collective goal - "helping one million men face the day". Becoming a household name, Ra. Skincare has featured in GQ magazine and continues to produce simple, naturally wonderful and vegan products. It is also tough when you don't have a clear career trajectory, have a interest or career change since being 18 or even feel like you have to pursue something specific due to stereotypes stereotypes. 24: One Year On! A Chat with Becki and Sophie
We are nearing the end of Season 3, and also approaching our one year anniversary! So, hosts and graduates Becki and Sophie decided to have a catch up, reflect on the past year (and what a rollercoaster it's been) in the hopes that listeners can resonate and enjoy! * In this episode, Becki and Sophie talk about everything that has happened over the past year and the aspects they have learnt about grad life. Through experiences, highs and lows and the conversations they have had with their wonderful guests - a lot has changed. In the format of asking each other 3 questions (much like waaay back to Episode 2) they managed to keep to some kind of structure! Becki is living in London, working in social media in the real estate industry and rolling out Knight Frank podcasts and freelance journalism. Sophie is working with management consultants as a freelancer, applying for jobs and just started renting with her partner. It's hard for Becki and Sophie to not natter on about grad life (as it is a passion topic after all). However, to give you a bit of a summary, they discuss the value of your degree, work environments, job applications, different kinds of relationships, moving house and to the big city, being bold, finances, and how to manage those good and bad weeks. A lot of this is filtered through the difficult time we are in now, but it also routes back to last year and what we hope for in the future. If you feel the same way or want to chat about anything that was discussed, Becki and Sophie's inboxes are always open!  Tune in for our Season 3 finale with another graduate takeover, and stay up to date on our socials with what we have in store to celebrate our 1 year in September!  * Grad Life by the Horns is a podcast covering every element of graduate life. 23: Radio, Confidence and Representation with Kaylee Golding
AUG 3, 2020
23: Radio, Confidence and Representation with Kaylee Golding
This week, we talk to the wonderful Kaylee Golding - or in other words 'your favourite gyal from Brum'. To give you a glimmer of context, Kaylee is an award winning Radio Presenter and DJ, podcast host, LGBTQ+ rights and Black Lives Matter activist, body positivity influencer and so much more. We are so grateful for her coming on and talking about being your true authentic self, representation in broadcasting, and getting into the competitive industry. We hope you, as graduates, get as much out of this as we did.  * Moving from Birmingham to London to study Radio and Digital Production at the University of Westminster, Kaylee's love for radio grew and has come on leaps and bounds. Being resourceful and determined enough to accumulate lots of experience in community and university radio, she has managed to explore the avenues of producing, presenting and DJing at Radar Radio, Bauer Media Group, and The Beat London. Alongside her busy schedule, she DJs and presents in The Beat London Saturday's 4 - 7pm which celebrates Urban Music and R&B, HipHop, Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, Afrobeats and much more. As well as this, Kaylee is the host of the podcast 'On Your Gaydar' which opens up voices from the LGBTQ+ community a combines comedy, stories ("The T") and education. In this episode, the topic of diversity in the radio industry is discussed at length and just how much needs to be done to improve representation. Kaylee, alongside Grad Life by the Horns producer Pulama Kaufman and Sara Hebil-Motie, founded and developed the Radio Silence Movement to bring the statistics to the surface and pledge to put pressure on the industry to diversify. She has gained so much experience on the music scene, interviewed tonnes of well-known and up-and-coming artists and has learnt to fully embrace herself and have full confidence in her abilities. She offers countless tips and anecdotes on how to best access and navigate radio and broadcasting, especially as a minority. On her social media, she conveys a wonderful message to be unapologetically yourself and actively stop comparing yourself to others - learning to focus on what you do have and not on what you don't. You want a pep talk? We highly recommend you give this a listen and give her a follow.  * Grad Life by the Horns is a podcast covering every element of graduate life.
