Phumzile grew up under the apartheid regime that restricted almost every aspect of her life and person. She joined the movement that created the first democratic government of South Africa and became a member of its Parliament in 1991. Mentored by Nelson Mandela, Phumzile served in his cabinet as Minister of Trade and then became the Deputy President of South Africa in 2005. For more than a decade, she has brought her mission of championing women and girls to a global stage.
