<p>On the night of October 3, 2002, Gwen Amber Rose Araujo, a transgender teen from California attended a party at a home rented by Jose and Paul Merel. Michael Magidson, Jason Nabors, Jason Cazares, Emmanuel Merel, and Nicole Brown were all present at the party. Upon learning that Gwen was biologically born a male, the men became irate that they had engaged in sexual acts with her previously. This led to a brutal attack on Gwen which ultimately caused her death. Gwen&#39;s case paved the way for important legislation being passed in California which aims to eradicate the use of the gay/trans panic defense in court cases. </p>
