The Grid Is For Squares

<p class="sqsrte-large">Well, there’s no new episode of the podcast, but I recently got back from a trip up to our homestead so I thought maybe a blog post would be better than nothing.</p><p class="sqsrte-large">But first things first. Are you doing ok? Are any of us doing ok? I know I’m not. The possibility of returning to normal was so bright and tantalizing for a precious handful of weeks and now here we are again… isolated, nervous, and still profoundly not normal. It’s been long enough now that I can feel my old friendships, my old self, fading at the edges. Who were we all before this started? In the time since we last updated here, the <a href="https://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/article252730748.html" target="_blank">River Fire</a> raged nearby for one nerve-wracking week back in July. It’s out now, and I know that we were lucky—only 10,000 acres? only one week? didn’t touch our property?—but the added dread is not particularly helpful in these dread-filled times.</p><p class="sqsrte-large">And on top of <em>that</em>, my grandpa died last week. He was my last remaining grandparent, which fills me with this strange hollow feeling and more grief than I was expecting. And again, it’s hard not to compare myself to others—many people have lost their parents, or spouses, or children this year. But I know there’s no sense in comparing my burdens to anyone else’s. We’re all in the thick of it and we’re all doing our best.</p><p class="sqsrte-large">Well, shoot. This wasn’t supposed to be a post about my mental health; it was supposed to be a property update. And I’ll get there. But I wanted to let you know what’s been going on with us in the background as we still try to put one foot in front of the other, still try to build and create and save money for future building and creating.</p><p class="sqsrte-large">So. Let’s get to the good stuff, shall we? Vince and his mom have been spending a fair amount of time up on our homestead, but my work schedule hasn’t allowed me to get up there for ages. Finally, the stars aligned and I was able to get up there for 4 days. And… it was over 100 degrees every day. It was so hot. It was SO. HOT. We finished the yurt itself a couple months ago, but the inside is slowly filling with furniture and turning into a proper habitation. The next step is working on the space <em>outside </em>the yurt: a <strong>genkan</strong> (or entryway), a <strong>retaining wall</strong> and <strong>deck</strong>, a tiled <strong>terrace</strong>, and an <strong>outdoor kitchen</strong>. This will be a long project, but we’re making progress.</p><p class="sqsrte-large">So, with no further ado, here are some pictures from last week’s trip up north! The inside of the yurt is being decorated with Judy’s furniture from her house in Napa; the retaining wall is being built with 12”x4” concrete retaining blocks ($3 per block); the entryway is being built from (slightly-twisted but cheaper “Manager’s Special”) 2x6 lumber and the offcuts of OSB from our yurt platform.</p> <a data-title="" data-description="" data-lightbox-theme="dark" The rest of the summer, we’ll mostly just work on smaller projects like improving the rain catchment basin, firescaping, and saving money to build more things.</p><p class="sqsrte-large">So enjoy your summer, everyone! Well, we have another “Grid Is For Squares Unplugged” this week… a little shorter than other episodes in the past. But Vince and I have been so busy lately and I know everyone understands. We’re doing our best. The podcast I was recently hired to produce professionally, The Suburban Women Problem, cracked Apple Podcasts’ Top 200 in its first week, which has been a strange and interesting and extremely stressful ride. But SWP is a political podcast with high-level guests like Chasten Buttigieg and this is a totally different beast… weird, small, and very personal. I’m fine with The Grid Is For Squares never topping any charts or getting any press—in fact, I prefer it that way. But if you are here and you have been traveling with us on this journey, thanks. We’re glad you’re here. So while I’ve been doing that, Vince has been living up on our property with his mom and his brother Morey, just like he has since the beginning of April. Most of this episode is him updating everyone on what they’ve been up to—myself included, since I haven’t been there. P.S. “The Miscreant Zone” is what Vince calls the shady area behind the greenhouse. I didn’t know what to call this episode and that made me laugh, so now it’s the title. That’s TGIFS Unplugged for ya, baby.

I’m not going to lie to you, friends. I really did not want to edit this episode of The Grid Is For Squares. I’ve been working 60 hours a week at my new job, which is creating and editing a podcast, so the last thing I wanted to do was edit another podcast in my “free time.”But I’m glad I did, for a few reasons. One, I haven’t seen Vince much this spring and it’s always nice to hear his voice. Two, our power was out in Glendale when we recorded, and it came back on while we were recording, which was a fun real-time adventure to go on during our recording session. Hi friends! So April has been weird. I mean, of course the whole past year has been weird, being a sentient creature is weird, anything existing in the universe is weird, but for our particular microcosm, April has been particularly weird. I just started a new job so I’ve been living alone in our apartment in LA while Vince, his mom, and his brother Morey have been living off the grid on our homestead all month. So Vince and his mom and brother recorded this episode up on the property, hanging out in our greenhouse. It was great to hear Vince’s voice, because I miss him, but it was also interesting to hear about what they’ve been up to and what it’s been like living off the grid for a month.
