Details

Welcome to Subjective Cinema, where I interview my favorite people about their favorite movies. Sure, it's a thinly-veiled ploy to stay in touch with people across the country, but it's also a great time, talking with smart people about the things they love. Art by Lara Barton. Theme music is "Spring Chicken" by Bryan Teoh. (Marked explicit for cursing. Anything more serious will be indicated in the description on an episode-to-episode basis)

Loving Vincent (feat. Nicolette Paglioni)

Loving Vincent (feat. Nicolette Paglioni)

CW: discussion of self harm, suicide, and mental illness (specifically bipolar and/or schizoaffective disorders). We are talking about these things almost exclusively in terms of Van Gogh’s life, so if you’re familiar and comfortable with those (sometimes gorey) details, you will likely not be bothered by this conversation. We also talk some about sex workers, but not really about sex work.

Today I'm talking with Nicolette Paglioni about the stylistic masterwork that is Loving Vincent, the 2017 film where every frame is hand-painted. It's a masterful film about the life and death (mostly death) of Vincent Van Gogh, and if you ever wanted to know something about the man Nicolette will be happy to share it with you. We talk about many nuances of his life, the wonder of animation and rotoscoping, making art, and mental illness.

There's also more to the video version this week, as it features paintings by Van Gogh that Nicolette touches on that are not heavily featured in this podcast, seeing as it's an audio medium.

If you're interested in the podcast Nicolette mentioned about finding the portrait of Dr. Gachet, that can be found here! Or follow these links if you're interested in a new movie being made by this studio in the painted style, or want to check out the Booth Western Art Museum.

The Princess Bride (feat. Shelby Turner)

The Princess Bride (feat. Shelby Turner)

CW: brief discussions of death/suicide in the context of the film. The discussions of suicide do not appear in the abridged, video version of this episode.

Today I'm talking with Shelby Turner about The Princess Bride, an absolute classic! We cover all kinds of things including masculinity and gender roles, how costuming designates class, the nuances of the movie's framing device, and how cool it is that they filmed in an actual castle and threw a rat costume at Cary Elwes.
