Dr. Paul Subar passionately recounts his journey through life and dentistry, starting from his childhood filled with music to becoming a highly accomplished dentist. Despite an early passion for music influenced by his family, an unexpected encounter with a dentist while surfing steered him towards dentistry. He shares anecdotes about his experiences in dental school at UCLA, his involvement in dental research, and his subsequent roles in hospital dentistry and public health service. Dr. Subar emphasizes the value of mentorship, continuous learning, and treating colleagues with respect in his reflections on a fulfilling career.----Professor at the Dugoni School and the director of the school's Special Care Clinic/Hospital Dentistry Program, Subar teaches three core courses in the curriculum and a variety of weekly seminar programs. He specializes in access to oral health for patients with special needs, including those with severe medical, developmental and/or psychosocial conditions. Subar's clinical responsibilities include delivery of dental services to patients requiring hospital dentistry as well as responding to consultation requests from the transplant and medicine services at California Pacific Medical Center. He has served on several key school committees including the Admissions committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Faculty Appointments and Tenure Committee, and is the chair of the Extramural Programs Committee.A graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz with baccalaureate degrees in both biochemistry and molecular biology, Subar earned his DDS from the University of California Los Angeles and completed his hospital training at the UCLA Medical Center. In 2009 he received his Doctorate in Education and Professional Leadership from University of the Pacific's Benerd School of Education. Subar's background includes serving as a dental director of a Federally Qualified Health Center and as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service.Subar received the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Faculty Award three years in a row and was the first award recipient of the California Dental Association's annual Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award. Join us for a discussion on the intricacies of what a Hospital Dentist does and a look into the life of the one-year Clinical Instructorship / Fellowship Position at Stanford University Hospital. After graduating, she returned to the Bay Area and completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), where she gained valuable experience in treating patients with complex comorbidities and dental needs. She then furthered her training with a clinical instructorship or fellowship in the Stanford Dental/Oral & Maxillofacial Medicine team doing Hospital Dentistry.   Dr. Lee currently serves as a Staff Dentist at the VAPAHCS, where she trains dental residents and dental students and provides comprehensive dental care to veterans. She additionally is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University Hospital, where she performs medically essential dental procedures for patients with medical conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, organ transplantation, and joint replacements. Dr. Lee enjoys performing surgical extractions, surgical procedures, restorative treatment, and prosthetic rehabilitation. She is committed to improving the oral health and quality of life of her patients, especially those who face challenges accessing dental services outside of a hospital setting.  Dr. Franco Hernandez was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated from the University of California, Riverside where he obtained a Bachelor’s in Economics, graduating with honors. He went on to complete his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Southern California where he spent dedicated time as a selective student with emphasized training in the areas of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dental Anesthesia, and Public Health. Following graduation, he began his post-graduate training as an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery non-categorical resident at Parkland Memorial Hospital / UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, one of the largest level 1 trauma centers in the state of Texas. He continued his training at Stanford University Medical Center where he completed a Dental Medicine, Oral & Maxillofacial clinical instructorship. Dr. Hernandez is currently working part time private practice and part time as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University Hospital. He diagnoses, treats, and manages a variety of conditions including: odontogenic infection, dentoalveolar trauma, edentulism, non-malignant oral lesions, benign cysts/tumor of the maxilla/mandible, osteonecrosis of the maxilla/mandible, TMJ disorders, and orofacial pain. He routinely performs surgical dental extractions, oral reconstruction with endosseous dental implants, removal of 3rd molars, bone grafting, excision of benign maxillary/mandibular cysts, as well as management of TMJ disorders and Orofacial pain. As a Dental Oncologist, he specializes in dental procedures and surgeries prior to, during, and following head & neck radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
