As an Integrative Health Practitioner I have come to realize that we simply haven't been taught how to optimize our health, and that the average person has habits that are negatively impacting their health, due to this lack of knowledge, through no fault of their own. Public health and our school system simply don't teach us enough about nutrition, sleep, stress, gut health or how interconnected our bodies are! Modern life has us more sleep deprived, stressed out and the sickest ever, and I believe it is time to bring this education to you, so that you CAN be empowered in your health and you can then make the right choices for you and your family. The choices you make today impact your future 1 year, 5 years, 10 years + from now. It is never too early to start looking after your health, as Health is your TRUE wealth....without it what do you have? I use this podcast to support my passion project - non-profit, Girls Matter (www.girlsmatter.ca), breaking the poverty cycle 1 girl, 1 family, 1 village at a time. The mission is to keep girls in school and stop teenage marriages, because school isn’t free in over 50 countries around the world and when parents have to make the difficult choices of feeding their kids or paying for school, food wins. And when the girls hit their teen years, they will often be married off so that someone else becomes responsible to feed them. Keeping girls in school instead creates a generational ripple effect, because an educated girl is more than twice as likely to ensure her own children are educated. Educating girls also grows the GDP of countries, when they get into the workforce. This is how together, we can change the world. Guests on this podcast are invited to donate to this important cause. After graduating from medical school in 1965, Helene developed severe low back pain during her first pregnancy and lived with it for 37 years. Despite her medical knowledge and a long list of conventional and alternative approaches, lasting relief stayed out of reach until she uncovered a physical cause that had been widely overlooked.Helene explains that a large percentage of low back pain may come from misalignment in the pelvic bones and sacroiliac joints. She shares how this simple mechanical issue can create ongoing pain, why it often goes undetected, and how a quick assessment using the hands can reveal what scans often miss. From that discovery, she developed a simple two-minute exercise that helped many people find fast relief and inspired her book, Low Back Pain: Three Steps to Relief in 2 Minutes. The conversation also explores her work with QR Cream, a mannitol-based topical cream she developed after seeing rapid pain relief through mannitol injections around irritated nerves. Helene shares how the cream performed across many painful conditions and why she is passionate about giving people accessible options beyond medication and surgery. This episode is a hopeful reminder that pain has causes, solutions exist, and simple tools can create life-changing results.Key TakeawaysLow back pain is often labeled “nonspecific.” Helene explains that this can leave many people receiving care that never addresses the actual source.Pelvic alignment may be a major hidden cause. Misalignment in the sacroiliac area can create persistent low back pain.Hands-on assessment matters. Helene highlights the value of physical examination and how much can be learned through touch.A simple two-minute exercise can create significant relief. Her method helped many people quickly reduce pain.Surgery is not always the best first step. Helene encourages people to explore root causes before moving toward invasive procedures.Pregnancy can set the stage for low back pain. Hormonal changes, shifting weight, and ligament laxity can all affect pelvic stability.Support tools can make a real difference. Seat cushions, pelvic support belts, orthotics, and regenerative approaches can all help reduce strain.Topical pain support can be powerful. Her QR Cream showed strong results across many pain conditions.Pain relief improves quality of life. When pain eases, people can walk, move, sleep, and live more freely again.About the Guest:In the last 12 of her 55-year medical practice, Dr. Hélène Bertrand concentrated on treating painful conditions. From Body Shame to Inner Ally 💫 | Ep 275
This is a powerful conversation on reclaiming your relationship with your body. 💫 Anne Poirier shares her journey through anorexia, yo-yo dieting, and body shame that finally shifted at a breaking point after knee surgery. The episode introduces body neutrality 🌿 as the path to healing—moving away from self-judgment and toward gratitude by focusing on what the body does rather than how it looks. It dives into breaking the “when I, then I” trap ⛓️, reconnecting with intuition 🧠, and taking back personal power from diets and external authority, while reframing movement as a tool for independence and living fully now ❤️‍🔥.Gift:E-book: Unlocking Body Confidence: https://shapingperspectives.com/confidence/ Offers:Our Book (episode 249) - Empowered: The Journey From Victim Island To Solution City: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/1989849776?psc=1&smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDpQuantum Life Mastery School: https://amplifyimpactacademy.com/quantum-life-mastery-schoolIntroduction video about Girls Matter: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R3-xqzJLZW14om1PhFClcU_oRSZ8zgip/viewThe Light Circle Membership:https://amplifyimpactacademy.com/thelightcircle-aligned-coreMeet Your Unconscious Mind Workshop: https://amplifyimpactacademy.com/umFREE 7 Day Trial: NuCalm Products to recalibrate your nervous system / improve your sleep:: https://nucalm.comUse my promo code at checkout: YGHJ to get 15% off your monthly subscription, every month. Episode Summary: Key TakeawaysPersonal Journey to Purpose: Poirier's 30-year struggle with anorexia and yo-yo dieting, fueled by childhood body-shaming, ended after a knee replacement forced a "breaking point" and a career pivot to helping others.Body Neutrality as the Path: The core philosophy is to shift from body hatred to gratitude by focusing on function over appearance. This creates a neutral middle ground—an "inner ally"—that enables healing.Reclaiming Personal Agency: A key theme is reclaiming power from external authorities (doctors, diets) by listening to one's own body and intuition. Poirier's anger at the lack of public education on diet science (e.g., the 1944 starvation experiment) fueled her mission.Movement for Independence: Exercise should be reframed from a weight-loss tool to a means of maintaining independence and quality of life, enabling activities like playing with grandkids.TopicsPoirier's Personal JourneyEarly Programming: Childhood messages ("chubby," "sturdy") and a doctor's weight warning created a belief that her body was "wrong."Anorexia & Yo-Yo Dieting: A 3-year battle with anorexia was followed by a 30-year cycle of yo-yo dieting and compulsive exercise. The "Breaking Point": A knee replacement forced a pause, revealing the cycle's futility. This led to journaling, self-reflection, and a career pivot to help others. The "When I, Then I" TrapSocietal Conditioning: The "when I lose the weight, then I'll be happy" mindset is a trap based on external validation.Internal Work First: True change must start internally. Poirier's "don't wait for your wake up call" philosophy means living life fully now in one's "here and now body."Body Neutrality & GratitudeThe Middle Ground: Body neutrality is a neutral space between hatred and forced love, which is often unattainable.Function Over Appearance: The key is shifting focus from appearance to function (e.g., heart pumping, breathing, digestion). The "Good Gift" Analogy: Treat your body like a "good gift" (your only home) to care for it, rather than a "bad gift" to be neglected.Reclaiming Personal AgencyPower of Intuition: Reclaim power from external authorities (doctors, diets) by listening to your body's signals (hunger, fullness, energy).Advocacy is Essential: Advocate for yourself, especially when medical advice feels dismissive.Movement for Independence: Exercise should be reframed as a tool for maintaining independence and quality of life, not for weight management.About the Guest: Anne Poirier, CSCS, is a nationally recognized Body Image Expert, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and author of The Body Joyful: My Journey from Self-Loathing to Self-Acceptance. With a degree in Exercise Science and over 30 years in health and wellness, Anne has turned her own recovery from eating disorders and body shame into a mission to help others find freedom and peace with food, movement, and themselves. A pioneer in the body neutrality movement, Anne’s insights have been featured in Shape, Women’s Health, The New York Times, Washington Post, HuffPost, ABC, FOX, CBS, and NPR. Her major accomplishments include publishing The Body Joyful, Not a Fat Annie and The Body Neutrality Playbook, and partnering with researcher Kayla Nuss on the NoWeigh app. She also served on the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Lived Experience Task Force and leads Shaping Perspectives… A Woman’s Way to Joy.Contacts:Shaping perspectives website. https://shapingperspectives.com/ LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/annepoirier11 Instagram https://www.instagram.com/annepoirier11/ Linked In https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-poirier-72b66344/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@annepoirier114About the Host:Melissa is an Integrative Health Practitioner and a Board Designated Master Trainer of Hypnotherapy, Trainer of NLP, Time Line Therapy®, and NLP Results Coaching, helping people get to the root cause of their health issues and then get lasting results.
