Homemaker Portrait | Jan Roueche

Today I am chatting with Seasoned Homemaker, Jan Roueche. Married for over 40 years, Jan and her husband have raised 10 children, homeschooling them for many of those years…a topic which comes up a good bit in our conversation. When Jan and her husband married the were both new Christians so not only were they learning how to live together and create a harmonious home life, they were both learning how to faithfully walk with Christ, and it wasn’t always easy. We discuss some of the practical need for structure when living in a large family and Jan shares a little about her current season of homemaking which involves caring for her husband as he battles Parkinson’s disease. Jan shares many tips, a lot of practical advice and much wisdom throughout our conversation. I especially love that her advice is centered on the need to cultivate a deep abiding relationship with the Lord.

Homemaker Portrait | Jen Thayer

I am chatting with seasoned homemaker, Jen Thayer, about her experience keeping a home for the past 25 years with her husband Dan and their 9 children! Jen is a homeschooling mom with 3 special needs kid, 2 of which are internationally adopted. We talk about how these children are an integral part of their unique family culture, bringing challenges and blessings Jen never expected but thanks God for every day. We cover all the usual ground of beginnings, influences, challenges, fails, wins and favorites, and we bond over our love of literature and the importance of a family library.

Pillars of Homemaking Deep Dive | Rhythms & Routines

I am so excited to finally be talking about the 3rd Pillar of Homemaking, Rhythms and Routines, with my friend and past AoH guest, Leslie Lucadou.

We will start with a brief review of the 4 Pillars of Homemaking, then spend some time defining rhythms and routines-talking about the difference between the two and giving some examples of each. Then we look at motivations (or the why) for establishing rhythms and routines, contrasting the world’s ideas vs what God has to say about our why. Next we talk about 4 rhythms of christian living; worship, rest, work and play—what those might look like and how we can use homemaking to help and not hinder these rhythms. Finally we end with a few pitfalls to avoid when establishing rhythms and routines.
