Matthew starts out his gospel with a long genealogy of Christ’s pedigree. Why does it matter? Because in order for Jesus to claim to be a king, he needs to prove that kingship is in his bloodline. Matthew didn’t have ancestry.com to assist him. He did research the old-fashioned way and researched the temple scrolls. Thank God He did, because shortly after he penned this book, the temple with all its scrolls was destroyed, never to be recovered.

So the genealogy we read in this passage is the last surviving Jewish one that connects Jesus to Abraham.

That may not be very exciting to you, but to a guy like Matthew, it was mind-blowing.
