One was a mighty bird with strong wings and unusually long legs. The other was a puny bird with small wings and weak legs. むかしむかし、二匹の鳥さんがいました。一匹は強くて、力強い羽根と普通より長い脚を持っていました。 もう一匹は弱々しい鳥さんで小さいな羽根と弱い脚を持っていました。 ☆The mighty bird thought he was the fastest and the most powerful bird of all birds.  強い鳥さんは自分が鳥の中で一番早くて強い鳥だと思っていました。 ☆One day, the puny bird saw the mighty bird trying to snatch food from the other birds. ある日、弱い鳥さんは強い鳥さんが他の鳥の食べ物を奪ってるのを見ました。 ☆“Stop doing that!” said the puny bird. やめて！ ☆“Haha! You! Just a tiny week bird. What can you do against me?” said the mighty bird. はあ！きみ！こんな小さくて弱々しい鳥で、どうやって私と戦う？（何かで僕に抵抗するわけ？） ☆“Let’s have a race to a southern island, which is 10,000 kilometers away and I will show you,” said the puny bird.  10000キロ離れた南の島へのレースをしよう！僕の実力を見せてやる！ ☆On Monday night, the sky was clear and windless and a mass of stars were twinkling as the two birds set out for the southern island. 月曜日の夜、空は綺麗で無風で、いっぱい星がきらきらしていました。この二匹の鳥さんが南の島に向かって出発しました。 ☆“Hey, puny bird! Set to go?” said the mighty bird. 弱々しい鳥！準備はいいかい？ ☆“All set. Let’s go!” said the puny bird.  準備万端.出発しよう！ ☆On Tuesday night, the weather was nice and they had flown over 1 island and 9 mountains from the starting point. 火曜日の夜、いい天気でした。鳥たちは出発点からもう島が一つと山は9カ所飛び越えました。 ☆“Hey, I am faster than you!” said the mighty bird. 僕はきみより早いぞ！ ☆“It’s not over until the fat lady sings!” said the puny bird.  最後まで結果を安易に決め込むな！ ☆On Wednesday night, the shining full moon lit the black sky. They had flown over 2 islands and 18 mountains from the starting point.  水曜日の夜、真っ暗な空に満月が光っていました。鳥たちは出発点からもう島が2つと山は18カ所飛び越えました。 ☆On Thursday night, it was cloudy with a little wind. They had flown over 3 islands and 27 mountains from the starting point.  木曜日の夜、曇ってて風もすこしありました。鳥たちは出発点からもう島が3つと山は27カ所飛び越えました。 ☆On Friday night, the sky grew dark and overcast. It started to get windy. They had flown over 4 islands and 36 mountains from the starting point. 金曜日の夜、空は暗くなり、曇りました。風は強くなりました。鳥たちは出発点からもう島が4つと山は36カ所飛び越えました。 ☆“You got slower! I am still faster than you!” said the mighty bird. きみ、遅くなったよ！僕のほうがずっと早いよ！ ☆“I’m gonna stick with it,” said the puny bird.  諦めないよ！ ☆On Saturday night, it was a stormy night with thunder and lightning. They had flown over 5 islands and 45 mountains from the starting point . 土曜日の夜、雷と稲光があった暴風雨の夜でした。鳥たちは出発点からもう島が5つと山は45カ所飛び越えました。 ☆They were almost to the southern island, but they had no choice but to take a rest due to very bad weather. 鳥たちはもうすぐ南の島に着きますが、悪い天気で休まざるを得ません。 ☆“The rain is too heavy and the wind is too strong to keep flying. So, let’s take a nap to rest up for tomorrow,” said the mighty bird. “Roger!” said the puny bird.  雨も酷すぎて風も強すぎてもう飛べないよ。だから、ちょっと休憩しよう。よく休んでから明日出発しよう。 ☆Then the two birds came in to land and went to have a rest respectively. However, the mighty bird did not want to lose this race. He snuck out and flew away to the southern island. それで、鳥たちは着陸してそれぞれ休みました。しかし、強い鳥さんがこのレースを負けたくなかったので。こっそりと南の島へ飛んで行きました。 ☆“Haha! Don’t even think about beating me!” said the mighty bird.  はは！僕を倒すのはまだまだだよ！ ☆The next day, on Sunday morning, the storm had passed though. The puny bird didn’t find the mighty bird. He rushed and kept flying to the southern island alone. 翌日、日曜日の朝、暴風雨が過ぎました。弱い鳥さんは強い鳥さんが見つからなかったのです。一人で南の島へ急いで飛び続けていました。 ☆On Sunday noon, the puny bird arrived at the destination. He had flown over 6 islands and 54 mountains from the starting point. But he couldn’t find the mighty bird at all. 日曜日の昼、弱い鳥さんはもう目的地に着きました。彼は出発点からもう島が6つと山54カ所を飛び越えました。 しかし、そこで強い鳥さんがぜんぜん見つからなかったのです。 ☆“Did anyone see the mighty bird?” asked the puny bird. “No, I didn’t……” answered the other birds. “Now what?” said the puny bird. だれか強い鳥さんを見た鳥がいませんか？ いいえ、見てないよ。今どうすればいいのですか？ ☆While sitting under a tree, here came a bear. 木の下で座っているところに、ちょうど熊が一匹やってきました。 ☆“Did you see the mighty bird?” asked the puny bird. 強い鳥さんを見ましたか？ ☆“I am afraid not, my friend. But I did see a bird with unusually long legs getting struck by lightning last night and he became “a roast bird” falling from the sky,” said the bear. すみません、見ななかったんですよ。でも、確かに夕べ、足が特別に長い一匹の鳥さんが稲光に打たれて、「焼き鳥」になってしまって、空から落ちたのを 見ましたよ。 ☆“Oh, poor mighty bird!
