Around the same time, pop icon Ayumi Hamasaki also saw her much-anticipated Shanghai concert cancelled at the last minute, despite full preparations being completed. These incidents unfolded against the backdrop of controversial remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who suggested Japan might invoke its right to collective self-defense if China were to use force to unify Taiwan, framing such a scenario as a potential survival-threatening situation for Japan. Although Takaichi later referred to Japan’s long-standing position under the San Francisco Peace Treaty to clarify Tokyo’s legal stance on Taiwan, Beijing denounced her comments as provocative and destabilising.
