Description

In 2007 the United Nations established “The International Day of Nonviolence” to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”. The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.

This was an exciting development for me both personally and professionally. It moved me further towards developing a coherent understanding of the discipline and practice of peace that I had begun to focus on in 2005.  I have had the opportunity to further my understanding of the practice of peace at FMCC developing classes, clubs, integrating what I have learned into classes, and supporting our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice.  Thank you all for being part of this journey with me.  Without you, there is no me.

Take a look at the UN site: https://www.un.org/en/observances/non-violence-day.   You will find it highly relevant to eliminating structural violence.  I also have attached some information on Nonviolent Communication.  I use the textbook in several of my classes.  Changing our communication patterns is a challenge for many reasons but small changes can make a big difference. I don’t always live up to the expectations of have set for myself, but I am more successful when my environment supports my efforts.  So, should you decide to experiment with NVC, find someone to play with.  It is a lifelong process not a destination. I will be happy to listen to your observations, feelings, needs, and requests honestly and empathically (that’s the four components and two processes of NVC).
