Pete Nottage: The one with the Cracker Going Bang!

In ep 151 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Pete Nottage joins Sam and Mark to talk about the ins and outs of TV continuity, as we learn the tricks from someone who trains new announcers! We hear from a teacher in the far distant future, avoid the mad professor, and add Joyce Grenfell to create a bit of strictness. There's a driving calamity, a caffeine infusion and a hi-5 pie chart! Sam brings her Mrs Claus to the festive table, there's a man with a fit of the giggles and a cracker going bang!

Our VO question this week is all about how much freedom you get as a continuity script writer to bring in your own personality.

Script 1

Now - observe. What you see is a typical classroom. Notice the chairs: separate, rigid, identical. Students sat in them for hours at a time. Yes, I know—barbaric. And despite having access to global knowledge networks, they still memorised dates… on paper. Yet in their own chaotic way, they were innovative. They pushed the boundaries of medicine, climate science, artificial intelligence - and they weren’t afraid to imagine futures they’d never see. But the 2020's were also an age of fear.

Script 2

It's definitely not a mint that's been left on your pillow - checking in for RAMSAY'S HOTEL HELL at ten to three. First, it's psychological, it's stylish, it's Dame Diana's final role and it's made by Edgar Wright - four reasons to stick around for our network premiere - LAST NIGHT IN SOHO. Expect very strong language and violence.

About our guest:

Pete Nottage can be described as a voiceover, a continuity announcer, a presenter, a very tired dad and the living and breathing embodiment of a midlife crisis. It just depends who you’re talking to! He’s been one of the voices of Channel 4 in the UK since 2005, spending nearly twenty years crafting the art of saying “Countdown is next” in increasingly creative ways! He was one of the launch voices of More4, 4Seven and 4Music, spent a decade as the station voice of BBC 6Music and was the station promo voice of Manchester United TV for an awful long time, which is quite an achievement when he knows precisely boff-all about football.

He’s been the literal voice of the earth at the Science Museum and drove around the world’s capital cities for a Smart Car web series. He's also been a vocal advocate for fair pay in the creative industries and has spent more than two decades making British broadcasting just a little bit warmer, a little bit funnier, and occasionally a lot more chaotic.

Tim Bick: The one with the Talking Dog Surprise!

Tim Bick: The one with the Talking Dog Surprise!

In ep 150 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Tim Bick joins Sam and Mark to talk about wildlife documentary reads, and whether we're so used to hearing Attenborough or Nat Geo styles that it's difficult to come up with anything new. We work out how intimate should an intimate read be, and how big should a big read be? We hark back 15 years to the comfortable announcer style that's so out of vogue these days - and ask what it is that a corporate film should really sound like. In the wildcards we get angry, get on Insta and bark our way into a new language!

Our VO question this week is all about letting your client hear the loopback on a take in a directed session.

Script 1

Along the edge of the sea ice, walruses forage for clams buried in the mud — their whiskers sweeping like sensors across the seabed. Ringed, bearded, and harp seals glide through cracks in the ice, surfacing for air where the water meets frozen sky.

Above us — the Arctic’s apex predator. The polar bear. It depends entirely on this frozen platform to hunt seals. As the ice retreats earlier each year, that balance — between predator and prey, ice and ocean — begins to fracture.

Script 2

Presenting Empiricon Stewart Racing.

Two teamwork powerhouses focused around the same goal - to unleash the full potential of a legendary race team.

Empiricon creates software that transforms teamwork and makes possible together what would be impossible alone.

And today, they join forces with an icon of Formula 1 to usher in a new era of racing.

Together, we will advance teamwork in ways never-before-seen within the greatest team sport on earth.

This is Empiricon Stewart Racing.

Carla Terry: The one with the Courtroom Drama!

In ep 149 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Carla Terry joins Sam and Mark to talk about singing confessions, pop star neighbours and a mathematical conundrum. We take on a courtroom drama - but which side are we on? Prosecution or Defence? And can you tell from our vocal delivery? We also merge Judie Dench, Miss Trunchbull and Anne Robinson for a TV gameshow announcer with real flair... it's a lesson in how to be mean but not too mean! Plus if you've ever wanted to play disappointed rather than angry - we have the tips and tricks.

Our VO question this week is all about the best kind of live Voice of God gigs out there!

Script 1

Members of the jury…

You sit here not as spectators, but as the conscience of this room.

Every look, every silence, every question that flickers across your mind — matters.

Before you sits a man: Mr Jones. He stands accused of taking a life.

A life that can never be returned.

Now, Mr Jones tells us this was an accident.

A misunderstanding.

A tragic alignment of circumstance and coincidence.

Script 2

Welcome contestants. Hanging above you are a number of balls. When they drop to the floor, you just need to find one and sit on it. However, there are one hundred of you and only ninety-nine balls. The last contestant to sit on a ball will be eliminated… and you’ll be blindfolded. Good luck, and remember, don’t come last.

About our guest:

Carla Terry lives in the woods in Hertfordshire with her partner and two kids. She loves exercise - the tougher, the better, and right now, hyrox is her thing! Life’s a mix of voicing, muddy walks to pubs, sport, and family chaos.

She once trained with some of the toughest military in the world on a reality TV show, but these days, you’ll catch her behind a mic at all sorts of events from sports and charity gigs to big corporate conferences around the world. Earlier this year, she was the live announcer for the family TV show 99 to Beat.
