Communities in the Top End are being hit by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle, after the category three system crossed the Northern Territory coast this morning near Cape Shield.
East Arnhem land communities including Nhulunbuy and Numbulwar are nervously waiting to get out and assess the damage but residents are being told to remain in shelter and monitor further emergency warnings..
The Weather Bureau says the system is likely to weaken into a tropical low as it moves across the Top End through today and tomorrow bringing intense rainfall and life threatening flash flooding.
