Locally adored pub The Sackville has revamped its gaming room to make way for a gussied up diner. It’s helmed by an ex-Bistro Moncur chef, with a menu riffing on French faithfuls. Plus, the largest exhibition of works by Kandinsky ever hung in Australia. 

It’s the latest restaurant by a prominent Sydney-based social enterprise. This venue offers fluffy, garlicky pampushky, handrolled holubtsi and small-batch vodka, all in service of employing and helping feed Ukrainians displaced by war. Plus, the pace is slow at the swell, Byron Bay’s latest luxury boutique hotel in the heart of town.

Gumshara is a cult-status Chinatown ramen shop serving what Merivale’s Dan Hong has called both “the chronic” and Australia’s “most hectic” tonkotsu soup. For 14 years it traded inside the now-shuttered Eating World food court on the corner of Dixon and Goulburn streets, before moving to a new dedicated site just steps away. Plus, a charismatic Med-leaning diner with ripper ocean views. 

One part takeaway shop, one part casual eatery, Derrel’s has an à la carte offering plus curries served from bain-maries. Vindaloo is always on offer, plus a Nepalese curry special (thanks to one of the venue’s Nepalese chefs) and butter chicken. The butter chicken’s tangy-sweet, rich gravy joins the tandoori half-chicken plate as a dipping sauce for hot chips (along with cucumber salad and mint yoghurt) and as a sauce on the hot chip butty.
