Uncultured Twenties

From sirens to cyclops to the Trojan horse, the Greek tale of Odysseus’ journey home has become legendary. 2000 years later, and it is still getting retold. The Odyssey (2026) by famed director Christopher Nolan is one of the most discussed films of the week (and year!). Breaking records, this film is making history as the first narrative feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras and one of the most expensive films ever made. Julia and Lian chat about the changes made between the original story and the film, the star studded cast, and the treatment of female characters both in historical settings and Nolan’s filmography. Have you gotten tickets yet? Fair warning: if you want to see it in true 70mm film as Nolan intended, there is a lengthy wait. Simple instrumentation and a powerful voice. Tracy Chapman’s 1988 debut album exploded on the scene when she appeared at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday tribute concert, quickly gaining critical acclaim and breaking records. Informed by her childhood in Ohio as a working-class Black lesbian, this folk-inspired album still resonates heavily today. Her hit song ‘Fast Car’ came back into public consciousness when country singer Luke Combs covered it in 2023, leading Chapman to break additional records (first Black songwriter to ever win a country music association award: song of the year) and us wondering why that is still happening in this day and age… For a musician that is so private about her life, Tracy Chapman lays it all on the line with this brutally honest album. It is a must listen!
