This Friday, Season 4 of The BIB Podcast, Episode 4 is called, “News from the Margin” with a special guest who’s excited to discuss the importance of journalism for communities of color!  🎙️🎧 Our Guest Naoka Foreman @kokoaka__ was a general assignment reporter at The Indy after freelancing as a journalist since 2017 when she launched her pop-cultural newsletter series The Majority: The Official Newsletter From the Margin. In 2016, she decided to pursue journalism after producing two short documentaries while attending Nevada State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in visual media with a concentration in digital cinema.  🎧🎙️ In 2019, Naoka launched News From the Margin on Instagram, a community-focused newsroom that seeks to inform ethnic groups, mainly Black and Latino Americans, about politics, history and culture on the local, national and global level. By establishing a newsroom, Naoka was able to develop and secure a reputation as a trusted journalist before being hired by a traditional news organization.  🎧🎙️ Naoka graduated from UNLV’s Journalism and Media Studies program with a master’s degree in 2022 after publishing a thesis about how Black female agency on social media. An American bachelor of Italian/Irish descent. Professional singer and bandleader (music producer too) in New York City for 25 years before moving to Las Vegas in 2018 for new adventures in the great American west. While singing remains a talent of mine, it is the strumming of ukuleles (baritone and tenor especially) which has become my greener pastures. Using my Fender gear, he strums a thousand songs spanning 1920s to 1980s. Once upon a time he thought he was a musician, until the day he realized that he is music. We are all music. She is currently pursuing a degree in elementary education to become an art teacher. She sales crochet items and handmade jewelry. Alyssa sales all her products on etsy and instagram. She started crocheting about two years ago after her grandma passed away who also crocheted and started her business not shortly after. She recently started creating her jewelry that was inspired by her passion to be an art teacher.
