'BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY' w/ Steve Young
My guest this week is Steve Young (writer for Late Show w/ David Letterman & The Simpsons; co-author of Everything's Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age Of Industrial Musicals & the star of the Bathtubs Over Broadway documentary). We discuss Steve’s iconic work writing for David Letterman (including producing the opening monologues for 11 years) and how it led him on a life-long journey that he never expected: becoming immersed in the world of Industrial Musicals.  We also talk about Steve finding his voice as a comedy writer, the workload and stress of nightly comedy writing, Dave’s Record Collection, the stigma to being an industrial musical performer, how so many people from the punk rock world including Don Bolles & Jello Biafra were also collecting these incredible records, Martin Short's time in industrial musicals, composer Hank Beebe, how Steve felt about being the subject of a doc, how industrial musicals are still being made today, why The Bathrooms Are Coming is perfection on vinyl, the journey of Steve befriending and forming deep friendships with the composers, performers and artists involved in these incredible shows, and more.So...shh...reduce the din....your Revolutions Per Movie's sales meeting...is about to begin!STEVE YOUNG:https://www.steveyoungworld.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. ENCORE PRESENTATION: 'LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL' w/ Jason P. Woodbury, Brian Lindstrom & Andy Brown
Welcome to this ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vaults.Today, we pay tribute to filmmaker Brian Lindstrom, who sadly passed away recently, with this incredible discussion about the film he co-directed, LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL, with his co-director Andy Brown & Aquarium Drunkard's Jason P. Woodbury. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing or working with Brian will tell you he was one of the kindest, wisest, and big-hearted people ever, and his filmmaking absolutely reflected that. If you haven't seen his films Lost Angel, Mothering Inside, or Alien Boy yet, please take the time to spend with these incredibly powerful films. He will be missed.(Episode 39 originally aired on June 6th, 2024).This week, I’m joined by JASON P. WOODBURY (of Aquarium Drunkard) and filmmakers BRIAN LINDSTROM & ANDY BROWN to discuss their incredible new film LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL. We talked about Judee Sill’s gnostic relationship to her music and how she backed it up in her lifestyle, what our introductions to her music were like, Sill’s disdain of being lumped in with Christian Rock & opening for rock bands, her influence on Andy Partridge of XTC, how the filmmakers shaped the film over the past ten years, Tooth & Nail Records, the mythologizing of a subject’s life in documentary filmmaking, Asylum Records and her ups and downs with David Geffen, Some Kind Of Monster, Sill’s vulnerability and ego in her diary writings and drawings, how they chose to animate Sill’s artwork and found her voice, Sill’s influence on a new generation of musicians, her iconic Old Grey Whistle Test performance of “The Kiss,” how the film addresses childhood trauma, addiction, and resilience, what parts of Sill’s life didn’t fit into the film, and the power of Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Guided By Voices & SST Records. So join us as we talk about one of the greatest songwriters to ever be part of the cosmos, Judee Sill, on this week’s Revolutions Per Movie.WATCH LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILLhttps://greenwichentertainment.com/film/JASON P. THE PREEMPTIVE 500th EPISODE CELEBRATION w/ Eugene Mirman

THE PREEMPTIVE 500th EPISODE CELEBRATION w/ Eugene Mirman
For this week's episode, I convinced my guest, comedian/actor Eugene Mirman (Bob's Burgers, Flight Of The Conchords, Delocated), to let me record my 500th episode 7 years in advance in order to capitalize on his star power. We discuss the magic of comedy albums & comedy concert films; recording visual comedy for an album, Eugene’s 7 LP Sub Pop masterwork I'm Sorry (You're Welcome), which includes 45 minutes of him crying and 159 orgasms, Eugene's scrapped "jokes for animals", his new LP & video special Here Comes The Whimsy, Eugene pushing the boundaries of a physical audio release by having it also available as a chair or a sack of flour that you have to carry around like a baby, how Eugene records his parts for the Bob's Burgers' songs. PLUS Eugene surprises me with a music film (5 minutes before recording) to discuss: "What The Hell Happened To Blood, Sweat & Tears," which is about the band being blackmailed into performing behind the Iron Curtain by the U.S. government. So let's join Eugene in sending fifty tap shoes to a restaurant of his choice on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!EUGENE MIRMAN: www.eugenemirman.comprettygoodfriends.comHERE COMES THE WHIMSY: EUGENE'S NEW FULL STAND-UP SPECIAL:www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHPEaN1DxKwREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss.
