The two young Swedish backpackers Heidi Paakkonen and Urban Höglin wrote many letters and postcards from their trip to their friends and family in the late 1980s. But one day they wanted to go hiking in the New Zealand wilderness and that’s when the correspondence dried up.

In 1976, the residents of the small town of Circleville in the US state of Ohio found ghostly letters in their mailboxes for the first time. The writer threatened to reveal their greatest secrets. He also made it clear that he knew things about the recipients' lives that they did not want to make public.
The letters influenced the lives of many people and were probably the reason for at least one death. Who wrote them, however, was never found out.
