Your Brain Defaults to Fear, Here’s How Faith Interrupts It

Your Brain Defaults to Fear, Here’s How Faith Interrupts It
Fear is one of the most natural human responses to uncertainty. When our plans fall apart, the instinct to worry, panic, or imagine the worst can take over almost instantly. But what if the way we respond to those moments is not automatic? What if it’s actually a choice?A recent experience reminded me of this truth in a very real way. When unexpected travel disruptions left me stranded in another country, I was faced with a decision many of us encounter in difficult situations: would I respond with fear, or with faith?Scripture has long taught that faith can bring peace even in uncertain circumstances. And now, modern neuroscience shows something similar. When we intentionally choose trust, prayer, and reflection, it can calm the brain’s fear response and help us regulate the stress and anxiety that uncertainty often triggers. How does faith help calm the mind and body in moments of uncertainty? In this episode, I share how choosing faith over fear can transform the way we respond to challenges, and why this daily choice can strengthen resilience in the face of life’s unpredictable moments.Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Fear is the default responseThe brain is wired to detect threats and activate a rapid stress response. Why can this survival mechanism leave us stuck in cycles of anxiety when we face uncertainty today? What happens when fear takes overWhen the brain’s alarm system dominates, it can suppress the part of the brain responsible for reasoning and emotional regulation. How does this “amygdala hijack” shape the way we react to stressful situations?Faith can calm the mind and bodySpiritual practices such as prayer and reflection can help regulate the brain’s stress response. How do faith and neuroscience point to similar pathways for building resilience?About Your HostHosted by Dr. Deepa Grandon, MD, MBA, a triple board-certified physician with over 23 years of experience working as a Physician Consultant for influential organizations worldwide. Menopause, Hormones, and Mental Health: Understanding the Role of HRT w/ Dr. Krista Olsen | Ep 51

Menopause, Hormones, and Mental Health: Understanding the Role of HRT w/ Dr. Krista Olsen | Ep 51
For nearly two decades, HRT carried a shadow. After the early interpretation of the Women’s Health Initiative study in the 1990s, the message across medicine was clear: hormones were dangerous.Millions of women were left in a “hormone desert,” navigating menopause with little more than advice to just grin and bear it.But recently, the initiative was reassessed, and the data tells a far more nuanced story. HRT may play an important role in improving symptoms and supporting cognitive and mental health during midlife. The problem is: the mindset around HRT may now be swinging just as dramatically in the opposite direction.Scroll through social media, and you might believe every woman should be on HRT. Brain fog, mood swings, poor sleep, weight changes, and hormones are increasingly framed as the universal solution. But menopause isn’t a single experience, and hormone therapy isn’t a single intervention. Some women benefit enormously from it, while others may not need it at all.So how should women and their physicians approach hormone therapy? What do we know about HRT and its effects on mental health? In this episode, I’m joined by the physician president of Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates and menopause-society certified practitioner, Dr. Krista Olsen. We explore how the medical understanding of HRT has evolved and what the evidence actually says about mood, cognition, and mental health during menopause.Things You’ll Learn In This Episode From common treatment to medical tabooThe Women’s Health Initiative reshaped women’s medicine almost overnight. How did its interpretation leave an entire generation of women navigating menopause without support?HRT isn’t a one-size-fits-all solutionHormone therapy is increasingly being framed as a universal solution for midlife women. When everyone is told they should be on HRT, what important clinical questions risk getting overlooked?Hormone depletion vs. hormone fluctuationMany of the most disruptive symptoms of perimenopause come from dramatic hormonal swings, not simply low estrogen. How does that distinction change how clinicians approach treatment?Symptom-based care matters more than hormone levelsIn an era of hormone testing kits and online wellness protocols, many women are being told to “optimize” their hormones. But what happens when treatment focuses on numbers instead of lived experience?About the GuestDr. Krista Olsen is the Physician President for Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates and a Board Member of i-Health. She is also a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner in 2024. After majoring in Biology with a secondary concentration in Scandinavian Studies at St.Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, Dr. Olsen attended the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She completed her OBGYN residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine. Dr. Olsen is also a certified physician coach working with physicians across the country on weight loss and goal setting, as well as bringing these skills into the clinic setting with her patients. Fibroids, Inflammation, and Heart Health: What Women Should Know w/ Dr. Kevin Lie | Ep 50

Fibroids, Inflammation, and Heart Health: What Women Should Know w/ Dr. Kevin Lie | Ep 50
Most people have been told fibroids are “just a woman’s issue.” A benign growth, a heavy period, and something to tolerate, manage, or eventually remove. That framing is dangerously incomplete. What if fibroids aren’t just a local gynecological problem, but an early warning system? What if they’re a vascular signal pointing to deeper inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and cardiovascular risk? We’ve been trained to silo the body. The uterus belongs to gynecology, the heart belongs to cardiology, and metabolism belongs to endocrinology. Stress is “just stress.”But the body doesn’t live in departments.Inflammation doesn’t check which organ it’s allowed to affect. Blood vessels don’t confine themselves to one specialty. And hormones certainly don’t stay politely inside one system. So when a woman presents with heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, anemia, exhaustion, and mood changes, maybe the question isn’t just, “How do we remove the fibroid?” Maybe the better question is, “What environment allowed this to grow?”Because fibroids are estrogen-responsive, blood-supply dependent, and influenced by metabolic signals. And when we start looking at them through that lens, they begin to look less like isolated tumors and more like biological feedback. What has changed about how the medical community understands and treats fibroids? I’m joined by the head of vascular and interventional radiology at Georgia Endovascular, Dr. Kevin Lie. Dr. Lie approaches fibroids not as isolated tissue growths, but as vascular phenomena. Together, we explore what it means to see fibroids as systemic signals, how vascular health and hormonal health intersect, and why the future of women’s care may depend on breaking down the walls between specialties.Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Fibroids may be a vascular warning signWe’ve treated them as isolated uterine growths. But what happens when we see them as part of a larger inflammatory and cardiovascular story?Inflammation is the common denominatorThe same diet, stress, and metabolic imbalances that damage arteries may also feed fibroid growth. Are we addressing symptoms while ignoring the soil?Heavy bleeding isn’t just inconvenient, it’s systemicChronic anemia affects mood, sleep, stress hormones, and immune resilience. How many “secondary” symptoms are actually central to the problem?Lifestyle and procedures aren’t oppositesMinimally invasive interventions can reduce suffering quickly. But how do we build care models where lifestyle medicine and procedural medicine reinforce each other instead of operating in silos?Guest BioHead vascular and interventional radiologist at Georgia Endovascular-Dr. Kevin Lie of Georgia Endovascular is a highly accomplished vascular and interventional radiologist. The Six Pillars of Health and Wellness Revisited | Ep 49

The Six Pillars of Health and Wellness Revisited | Ep 49
When it comes to being healthy, most of us know exactly what we should be doing. Move more, eat better, sleep earlier, stress less, and connect with people. And yet somehow, even with the best intentions, we fall off track. It’s easy to label that inconsistency as laziness or lack of discipline. But what if the issue isn’t effort? What if we’re trying to build habits without the foundation that makes those habits sustainable?Because real change asks more of us than information. It asks us for endurance and self-control to keep going when motivation wanes. That kind of strength rarely comes from willpower alone. In my own life, and in the lives of so many people, I’ve seen a pattern repeat itself: when one pillar becomes stronger, everything else starts to feel more possible. When we strengthen our spirituality, discipline with food becomes easier, movement becomes an act of gratitude instead of punishment, and rest begins to feel safe. We stop white-knuckling our growth because we’re no longer doing it alone. In this episode, I revisit the Six Pillars of health and wellness. I talk about how to identify where you are out of alignment and rebuild consistency in a practical, sustainable way. I also share how faith can anchor your habits, renew your resilience, and keep you motivated.Things You’ll Learn In This Episode Relapse is not failureWe tend to treat slipping up as proof we can’t change. But what if regression is actually built into the architecture of growth?Spiritual stability creates behavioral strengthWhen people trust God more deeply, discipline in food, movement, and rest often follows. Why does surrender increase self-control?Gratitude rewires the brainRepeatedly focusing on what is good strengthens neural pathways for resilience. What happens when you train attention instead of mood?About Your HostHosted by Dr. Deepa Grandon, MD, MBA, a triple board-certified physician with over 23 years of experience working as a Physician Consultant for influential organizations worldwide.
