Producer Rob Overbeck on Turning Scripts into Reality
This episode of Sasq'et The Story: Road to Streaming spotlights the often-invisible production department and features veteran production coordinator/supervisor Rob Overbeck (Better Call Saul, El Camino, Thor, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and more). We explore how production turns words on a page into shootable reality through logistics, budgeting, scheduling, location strategy, and problem-solving under time pressure. Rob explains his role as a “nuts and bolts” hub across departments, discusses why prep and rehearsals reduce costly on-set surprises, and breaks down how schedules and call sheets are built with the 1st AD amid shifting weather and changing pages. Using Sasq'et as a case study, he describes adapting story scope to resources, leveraging tax incentives and “movie magic,” and identifying the most essential story beats to produce efficiently without sacrificing impact. 00:00 Unsung Production Heroes 01:09 Series Mission and Guest Intro 03:23 From Page to Screen Teamwork 06:56 Explaining the Job Basics 09:10 Coordinator vs Supervisor Roles 13:34 Prep, Rehearsals, and Time Costs 17:42 Budgeting and Creative Constraints 20:12 Set Life and Celebrity Reality 24:33 Starting a New Project 27:34 Adapting Sasq'et for Screen 30:26 Choosing Where to Shoot 32:09 Faking Locations on Screen 33:53 Preproduction Timeline Basics 35:11 Script Breakdown and Gags 37:23 Budget-Driven Script Choices 39:48 Day 23 Scheduling and Tech Scouts 44:32 Showrunner vs Line Producer 49:37 Disaster or Tuesday Game 53:54 Weather Planning and Effects 58:26 Adapting for Easier Production 01:05:42 Wrap Up and Credits Appreciation ------------------ Want to join the team? The 12 Steps of the Hero’s Journey
What do Landman, Harry Potter, The Godfather, Breaking Bad, Groundhog Day and Sasq’et have in common? In this episode of Sasq’et: The Story, Joe Woolworth and author Maxim Langstaff explore Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey—not as a rigid formula for writing, but as a recurring pattern of emotional transformation that audiences instinctively recognize. Campbell looked across mythology and storytelling to identify recurring elements: an ordinary world, a call to adventure, resistance, mentors, trials, an ordeal, transformation, and ultimately a return as someone different. Joe and Max argue that the physical adventure is secondary; what audiences really connect with is the internal journey of the protagonist. They put that idea to the test by breaking down Tommy’s journey in Landman, asking what the series is really about beneath the oil fields, cartels, family conflict, and business drama. Is Tommy’s journey ultimately about leadership? Responsibility? Courage? Then Joe puts Max on the spot: Does Sasq’et actually follow the Hero’s Journey? They walk protagonist Mallory through the same framework—from her comfortable life as a veterinarian through an unexpected inheritance, a mysterious key, mentors, loss, discovery, love, and a journey that fundamentally changes how she sees herself and the world. The bigger lesson: great stories aren’t memorable because of what happens. They’re memorable because of what happens inside the character.
