* Last week we began a study of Solomon's discourse of philosophical thoughts contained in the book of Ecclesiastes. As we began our study, we examined the life of Solomon in order to begin to understand the background of the man who God used to pen these words. Solomon was a young man who grew up in a family containing much discord, distrust and intrigue.
* As we continue to approach an understanding of the theme of the book - Solomon's quest for a source of contentment, or fulfillment - we need to consider the difference between western and eastern "Philosophy." We, generally speaking, are influenced by our western culture philosophical frame of mind. However, Solomon wasn't from the western culture. Rather, Solomon was more of the eastern culture philosophical mindset.
* In Western Philosophy, the concepts of existence and ethics are primarily discussed using logic and intellectualism, and focus primarily upon individualism - our rights and potentials. In Eastern Philosophy, the concepts of existence and ethics are more considered from the perspective of "community" and are primarily "discussed" through a meditational understanding of the interconnectedness of reality.
* Today, we want examine Solomon's erroneous view that any interconnectedness of reality under the sun is a grasping for the wind and meaningless. The goal today is to understand and apply the core two truths which should shape anyone's Philosophy of Life - using either a Western or Eastern framework. Those two core truths are the Exclusiveness of YHWH and the Eternalness of man.
