<p>The other day my kid had me listen to this haunting Tool track <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RmLkY1387A">Faaip De Oiad</a> which samples a phone call made to Art Bell&#8217;s Coast to Coast AM radio show. The caller frantically relays a bunch of Area 51 conspiracies, and that got me to remembering about an afternoon in January 1998 when I explored the area myself.</p>
<p>I was demoing my company&#8217;s Internet music software at NAMM &#8211; the annual music business convention in Las Vegas. We were given a spare day, so I rented a car and drove as close as I could to Area 51. At the time, I was a compulsive listener to Art Bell&#8217;s radio show, so I knew I had to at least visit the famous <a href="https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-black-mailbox-alamo-nevada">black mailbox</a> and stop for a drink at the &#8220;little A&#8217;Le&#8217;Inn&#8221;. While I was there I pulled out my minidisc recorder and interviewed the locals about their experiences living out in this wasteland by the famously secretive military base.</p>
<p>Today, 26 years later, I&#8217;m releasing &#8220;Area 51&#8221;, the audio-poem I assembled that year.</p>

<h4>ABOUT THE MUSIC</h4>
<p>I remember listening to my friend Matt play a Zimbabwe melody on his mbira (thumb piano). I liked how he made the song fade in and out, eventually playing so quietly you could just hear the flesh of his thumbs brushing the metal tines.</p>
<p>Matt said, &#8220;These songs don&#8217;t really have beginnings and endings. It&#8217;s more like &#8216;Ancestor Radio&#8217;. You use your mbira to <em>tune in</em> and sing along with your ancestors. The song is always out there playing, waiting to be picked up.&#8221;</p>
<p>This composition was made to work in the same way. It loops without end. When you tune in, you&#8217;re invited to listen and watch for as long as you like.</p>
<h4>ABOUT THE VISUALS</h4>
<p>For eighteen years, my father ran the Electric Sheep screensaver on his computer. Similar to how the SETI@home distributed the computation to search for for alien radio signals across the Internet, electricsheep.org pooled together the resources of 1000&#8217;s of computers every night to render short clips of fantastically complex fractal flames. Scott Draves developed this project to help us imagine &#8220;what kinds of dreams androids might have&#8221;.</p>
<p>This video sequence was made by stitching together a few of these clips, slowing them down, and arranging them in a perfect loop synchronized with the music.</p>
