The Bittersweet Past: The Five Victims of Jack the Ripper (with Hallie Rubenhold)
MAY 15, 2026
The Bittersweet Past: The Five Victims of Jack the Ripper (with Hallie Rubenhold)
Since Victorian times, people have been obsessed with Jack the Ripper. There are endless volumes full of history about him and the gory deaths of his five victims. What's missing is information about the lives of the women he killed—until now. In this episode from our archives, we sit down with Hallie Rubenhold, social historian and author of the recently published book, The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper. In this eye-opening interview, we discover that, contrary to popular narrative, Jack the Ripper's victims were almost certainly not all prostitutes. Rubenhold has painstakingly reconstructed the previously untold stories of these five women, whose greatest tragedy was not being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but rather being born women in the Victorian era. Instead of focusing on these women's deaths, as virtually all study pertaining to the mystery of Jack the Ripper does, Rubenhold instead focuses on these women's lives, which have been roundly ignored by historians until now. The story of each woman provides a portrait of the underbelly of Victorian London, as well as gives incredible insight into the entire Victorian period, highlighting the vivid contrast between rich and poor and demonstrates how unbelievably precarious life was for women, particularly lower-class women, of the time. If you love true crime and history, don't miss this fascinating interview! Find Hallie at her website or on Instagram. ***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! Episode 628: When Moving Abroad Makes Coming Home Unaffordable
MAY 11, 2026
Episode 628: When Moving Abroad Makes Coming Home Unaffordable
Lots of Americans move abroad to a lower-cost-of-living country in hopes of making their salary stretch further. And if they manage to continue earning an American salary from abroad (even a modest one), they can go on to lead prosperous and comfortable lives far beyond what would be possible in the States. But what happens when they decide it's time to move home? A recent article in the New York Times, They Went Abroad to Save Money. Moving Back Seems Unaffordable looks at this conundrum, and we continue the discussion by musing on the article and its subjects, as well as scrutinizing Tiffany's lifestyle as a long-time expat. (Could SHE afford to move back to the States?) And is this all just an issue of people blind to their privilege who don't want to give up their cushier lifestyle? Be sure to weigh in with your thoughts, especially if you are an expat who has moved back home (a repat, like Katy). ------------------------------------- COME TO ROME WITH US: Our 4th annual Bittersweet Life Roman Adventure is taking place this year from 1 to 7 November 2026! Bittersweet Past: The Borgias: The Original Crime Family
MAY 8, 2026
Bittersweet Past: The Borgias: The Original Crime Family
On this episode from our archives, we tell a true story of corruption, evil, and avarice... A powerful, unscrupulous man whose two greatest vices are greed and lust. He's close to his family...perhaps too close (particularly his daughter). He has many children by different women, but the three he loves most are two sons and a daughter...a beautiful blond-haired daughter. He holds a position of great power, although the machinations he employed to get it are mired in scandal. Bribery was most certainly involved—and perhaps even blackmail. He is resented by those around him who feel he doesn't deserve his position. Hated by those who see him abusing his power, profiting off his office, and making a mockery of the very institution he rules over. He has placed his children in positions of power and authority within his sphere, and he is positioning them to take over the reins of his power when he is gone, dreaming of turning his elected seat into a family dynasty. If you think you know who I'm talking about, you're probably wrong. Pope Alexander VI, birth name Rodrigo Borgia, is the subject of our latest episode. Tune in to hear all about the "Evil Pope," his corrupt and rapacious family, and all the ways they are so uncannily like another powerful family we know too well. Also, we'll also discuss the places in Rome where Borgia family lived, worked, and played so you can follow along in the footsteps of what Mario Puzo called the "original crime family." ***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years!
