XAI & Data Centers in Memphis

901 Voices & Votes Podcast – Season 3, Episode 11 “xAI & Data Centers in Memphis” What does Memphis gain from becoming a major hub for artificial intelligence—and what could the community be giving up in return? In this episode of 901 Voices & Votes Podcast, hosts Kelly Price and Jett Lucas take a closer look at xAI/SpaceXAI’s massive Colossus data center operations in Memphis and the growing debate surrounding the expansion of data centers across the region. Kelly and Jett explore some of the biggest questions being raised by residents: How much water and electricity do these facilities require? What could increased industrial demand mean for the Memphis Sand Aquifer and the city’s drinking-water supply? What are the potential environmental impacts on surrounding neighborhoods? And do the jobs, tax revenue, investment, and economic development promised by these projects outweigh the potential costs? This episode asks a question that goes beyond technology: When major economic development comes to Memphis, how much information should the community receive—and how much of a voice should residents have in the decisions that could affect their neighborhoods, resources, and future?
