Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. Doug has returned from Vermont, where he participated in the first (and hopefully annual) Stowe Mountain Heritage Race. The race is skimo in nature but open to all-comers with an adventurous spirit. Lycra is not mandatory. Our guests are Nathan Fry and Brian Lindner, both locals and supporters of the Stowe ski scene. Fry is the director of the Heritage Race, while Lindner is the local historian of the Stowe/Mount Mansfield zone, where he has been a member of the Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol for over 50 years. It's now time to gather around the fire and learn some history about the 10th Mountain Division, Stowe Mountain Resort, and a region's commitment to ski culture. On Episode 135 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Mount Mansfield, the tallest mountain in Vermont. Randy has a dream: to be a ski patroller. Making a reservation and keeping a reservation. The full carbon Mountain Boot. Bike to ski and a journalist's inquiry. Doug gets into the race late. It's nice to know people. Nate Fry in the Vermont National Guard and a race director. Brian Lindner and 52 years in. Stowe Mountain's history. The Heritage Race. Thanks for listening and joining us for the 2025-2026 season. And remember: be safe out there. Episode 134: The Olympic Rings
On Episode 134 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. There's no hate, only love, in this Olympics-themed episode. Well, to be clear, and to backtrack a bit, maybe just a bit of disdain. So...skimo. Yes, it was. Despite our deep respect for Anna Gibson and Cam Smith (Smith is a CB local!), the powers-that-be neutered what skimo (it is skimo, right?) can be. Maybe what we need is some more spice, as in more longform mo', as in mountaineering. Which means Doug and Randy go totally deep on their feelings about the Olympics, the multi-ringed circus, and moving the skimo scene forward as the 2030 Winter Olympics loom on the horizon. And speaking of the Olympics and local games, Doug provides an update on the Power of Four and the Gothic Mountain Tour. On Episode 134 of the Totally Deep Podcast: The hot takes begin, and Randy is pumped. Big quads (not the Quad God). Anna and Cam came in for a solid 4th place. The mixed relay blow-by-blow. A transition zone snafu by Spain. First exposure to the ski in the mo. The technical aspects of the racing and the next step for an Olympic ski-mountaineering race. The Gothic Mountain Tour and Power of Four blow-by-blow. Thanks for listening and joining us for the 2025-2026 season. And remember: be safe out there. Hop scotch across the North Atlantic, and it's off to Norway's Lyngen Alps with the RAB crew. In this episode, we speak with Norway's Thea Røhme and Krister Kopala and get the lowdown on how their partnership works in high- and low-stress environments. Røhme is a charger on skis and is currently working toward her IFMGA certification, while Kopala is a highly regarded splitboard mountaineer who is making quite a stir on YouTube with his high-speed riding in some dicey situations. (You can find Kopala's YouTube here, and he is a regular over on Nikolai Shirmer's channel.) Doug and Manaaseh were in Norway for a RAB event where Kopala and Røhme, both RAB athletes, screened their upcoming film, New Terrain, which will be released this summer. The film explores the duo's relationship, their ascents and descents, and how they make it all work out. On Episode 133 of the Totally Deep Podcast: The good life in Norway's Lyngen Alps. The sometimes delicate art of communicating with your partner. Thea may build better anchors than Kristor. Not making a plan. Making a life and building out professional riding projects. Sourdough bread... why was it flat? The crux of New Lines. Heads up, North America, Kristor will spend two months seeking out fine snow in the States and Mammoth. He'll have his hardboots. And...our guests are Manasseh Franklin and Rachel Beck, who take over the podcast for a much-needed episode dedicated to what is in and what is out for 2026. Basically, what is out, according to our two hosts, is this: don't be a douche on the skintrack. No better words have been spoken. Be kind. Be mellow. Be dedicated to good craft. And...don't be mean out there, this should be fun. Othrwise listen in to some wisdom from Manasseh and Rachel and soak in the good word. Don't Yuck my Yum! Sweat equity is in. Being a douche, generally, and on the skintrack...it out. Dunkaroos and Legos are totally in. Strava...hmmm, it's a mixed bag. And so much more.
