He spent two years at NASA Headquarters for space shuttle return to flight and initial transition and retirement activities. He then returned to Marshall and became the center director. Lightfoot earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Alabama. Among myriad awards, three times he has received the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Executives -- the highest honor attainable for federal government work.
