Why declining to share is different from denying, how confidential differs from unconfirmed, and three sentences for a leader who cannot say it yet.
How does a leader stay honest when they know more than they can say?
I'm Sahar Andrade, MB.BCh, Neuroleadership Coach and Forbes Coaches Council member.
In my view, honesty does not require saying everything.
It asks a leader not to deny what is true, to say plainly that something cannot be discussed yet when that much is permitted, and to give a check-in date the leader controls.
One 2016 lab study found that stress measures tracked uncertainty. That was a lab task, not a workplace.
The step from there to a team waiting for news is my interpretation as a coach. It is not legal advice.
In this episode: three common answers when a team asks if something is going on, why declining to share is different from denying, the difference between confidential and unconfirmed, what two studies show and do not show, and one practice: three sentences and a floor.
Next episode asks: when a leader is finally able to say it, how do they deliver news the team has been bracing for?
