Sustainability leader Ma Jun unpacks China's green finance momentum, energy transition
In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, we sit down with Dr. Ma Jun to discuss sustainable finance trends in China and beyond. Dr. Ma is the former Chief Economist for China's central bank, the People's Bank of China, and was a lead architect of the country's first green finance guidelines and green bond standard. He also served as Co-Chair of the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group. Today, his roles include President of the Institute of Finance and Sustainability, a Beijing-based think tank; Chairman and President of the Hong Kong Green Finance Association; and Chairman of the Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment (CASI). In the interview, Dr. Ma explains why sustainable finance has grown significantly in China and globally, and he highlights examples of how green technology can be scalable. In China, for example, he notes that 60% of car sales are electric vehicles. "Fundamentally, I think the momentum is there because a lot of green activities have become economically viable," he says. "They are no longer slogans and for cosmetic PR reasons, but they are actually making money." We also hear how geopolitical conflicts are impacting energy transition strategies. "Renewable energy is [the] ultimate form of energy security," Dr. Ma says. "The energy crisis gives a very strong reason for speeding up the development of the renewable sector, and therefore, finance has to follow." We conducted this interview on the sidelines of the Building Bridges Summit in Geneva. John Kerry makes the case for optimism and urgency ahead of COP31
In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, we sit down with former US Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of the 7th annual Building Bridges conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Secretary Kerry was a key architect of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and in 2021 he became the inaugural US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate. In the interview, he discusses his role at previous UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties gatherings and his hopes for COP31, which will take place in Türkiye in November 2026. He tells us why he remains optimistic despite the challenges facing planetary and ocean health and the likely overshoot of the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree C global warming limit. At the same time, Secretary Kerry calls for greater speed and urgency in addressing climate change and decarbonizing the economy. "We have to get the scale way up there," he says. "We're just not moving as fast as we know we can move." Secretary Kerry says conflict in the Middle East has further solidified the business case for diversifying away from dependence on oil and gas to alternative energy sources. And he points to technologies that are already available to provide clean and abundant energy, even in some historically high-emitting sectors. He describes how Galvanize — the global asset manager where he serves as Co-Executive Chair — is incorporating these technologies into its investment strategy. "What we recognize is that the economy has already made its own decision," he says. "The economy writ large is moving in the direction of this new energy base." How GE Vernova uses electrification to drive energy access alongside decarbonization
In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, we sit down on the sidelines of Climate Week NYC with GE Vernova's Chief Corporate Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer, Roger Martella. GE Vernova is a global energy company with power, electrification and wind segments that completed a spin-off from General Electric in 2024 with the goal of accelerating the energy transition. Roger explains why electrification was a big theme at Climate Week NYC in 2026, and how the company is using electrification to support energy access and decarbonization goals around the world — including in underserved communities and the Global South. "A lot of discussion this week is: How do we electrify the planet so people have more access to affordable, reliable, sustainable electricity," Roger says. "The more we put investments onto the grid, the more we're electrifying the planet, the more we're helping decarbonize." Keeping up with the pace and scale of the world's electricity demands will require a growing energy workforce and robust public-public partnerships, Roger says. He describes a new level of optimism at Climate Week NYC in 2026 — alongside a focus on policy durability and finding common ground. "Policy cycles come and go. We've all been through Groundhog Day, where we're in favor of one thing, and then we're against it later," he says. "So, a lot of discussion this week of: How do we protect the core, how do we come to things that everyone agrees on." We conducted this interview at The Nest Campus in New York City, where the All Things Sustainable is an official media partner. Conservation International CEO on making the case for nature in the boardroom
In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, the new CEO of Conservation International explains how protecting and restoring nature is key to solving the challenge of climate change. "Nature is actually our best ally to address climate change," Dr. Sebastian Troëng tells us at his first Climate Week NYC since being named CEO in February. Conservation International is a nonprofit that partners with communities, governments and businesses to help protect and restore nature while improving human wellbeing. In the interview, Sebastian explains how companies can articulate the economic value of nature in a way that resonates with corporate decisionmakers. "What boardrooms need to understand is if they want to continue to have a revenue flow in the future, they need to contribute to conserve that nature that allows them to have a business model," he says. Sebastian outlines examples of where he's seen nature-based solutions scale effectively — and why he sees a big runway for further investment from the private sector. He also explains why constrained public budgets are creating a more conducive environment for collaboration. "We're seeing a greater appetite for coming up with innovative ways of combining government support, private investment, philanthropy to collectively achieve greater impact," Sebastian says. "People realize that the challenges the planet is facing are too big for any one sector or any one organization to solve on their own." As part of a multi-year philanthropic grants program the S&P Global Foundation launched in 2024, Conservation International is a Signature Grant Partner in the focus area of creating environmental resilience and will receive $2.5 million over five years. Why JPMorgan is looking at climate, energy and food system risks through a resilience lens
In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, we cover Climate Week NYC key takeaways with a guest who brings together perspectives from climate science and the financial sector: Dr. Sarah Kapnick. Sarah is Global Head of Climate Advisory at the largest bank in the US, JPMorganChase. Before joining the bank, she was Chief Scientist for the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA. In the episode, we unpack how the business and finance communities are responding to volatility from climate change, geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruption. Sarah explains why a powerful El Niño forecast has put food security in the spotlight at Climate Week NYC. Across these topics, Sarah says she's increasingly putting resilience front and center in conversations with clients. "You can't just build resilience for what you've seen in the past," she says. "You need to be building resilience to what we know will come in the future." Sarah says events like summer's heat waves have led to increased awareness of the physical impacts of climate change. "It's moving from being theoretical to actually physical and financial," she tells us. "And that is what I think is going to really drive action and capital deployment in the coming years." We recorded this episode on the sidelines of The Nest Campus, where the All Things Sustainable podcast is an official media partner.
