S14E11: 🥃 LIVE FROM DETROIT: BLACK LOVE, BLACK FILM & BOURBON! 🎬

OCT 1, 202613 MIN

Description

This episode of Beards, Bourbon, Whiskey is a little different — but in the best possible way. With Bo and Angry Principal unavailable, Q. Lewis calls in reinforcements as Shad from Shad Vs Everybody grabs a glass and jumps into the co-host chair for a special LIVE conversation with award-winning filmmaker, producer and actress Okema T. Moore! And Okema came to Detroit with something to celebrate. After taking home Best Director at the Detroit Black Film Festival in 2025, the Brooklyn filmmaker returned in 2026 with FOUR projects featured in a special screening block: 🎥 Love Zuri — Director/Producer, 🎥 Love Song — Lead Actress/Producer, 🎥 The Shower — Director/Producer/Lead Actress, and 🎥 Crossroads — Lead Actress. Four films. One festival. One hell of a conversation. But this episode goes deeper than filmmaking. Q, Shad and Okema get into the conversation surrounding Black love on screen and challenge the idea that loving, layered and authentic Black relationships somehow don't exist in film. Who gets to define what Black love looks like? Why do certain stories receive more attention than others? And what happens when Black filmmakers take control of the lens and tell those stories themselves? Okema also talks about wearing multiple hats in the film industry, creating opportunities, telling stories that reflect the fullness of Black life, and continuing to build a career both in front of and behind the camera. Meanwhile, Q and Shad are doing what BBW does best... 🥃 Pouring something brown. 🎬 Talking Black film and culture. 😂 Cutting up when they're supposed to be conducting an interview. 💬 And having the kind of conversation that can only happen when the cameras are rolling and the glasses aren't empty. The 7th Annual Detroit Black Film Festival brought Black filmmakers and stories from around the world to Detroit September 23–27, with screenings and events across the city — continuing its mission of creating a platform for Black voices in cinema. So pour yourself something good and pull up a chair. This ain't just about movies. It's about who gets to tell our stories — especially our love stories. 🥃 Drink Responsibly. Think Freely. And as always… Everybody Loves BBW. 👇 DROP A COMMENT: Do you think Black love is accurately represented in movies and television today? 👍 LIKE | 💬 COMMENT | 🔔 SUBSCRIBE #BeardsBourbonWhiskey #BBWPodcast #OkemaTMoore #DetroitBlackFilmFestival #BlackFilmmakers #BlackCinema #BlackLove #IndependentFilm #DetroitFilm #BrooklynFilmmaker #ShadVsEverybody #QLewis #BlackPodcast #BourbonPodcast #BlackStorytelling See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
