Description
THE LONG WAY HOME
Episode 17: When Light Breaks Your Heart | Psalm 119:129–136
What happens when you begin to see the world through God's eyes—and what you see breaks your heart?
In Episode 17 of Beyond Belief: The Long Way Home, we explore Psalm 119:129–136 and discover how God's Word does more than illuminate our path. It transforms the way we see ourselves, the people around us, and the brokenness of the world.
When God's truth begins to take root in our hearts, something remarkable happens. We become more aware of the lonely, the hurting, the overlooked, and those who have lost their way. Instead of rushing to judge, we begin to ask different questions. What might be behind someone's behaviour? What pain might they be carrying? How might God be calling us to respond with compassion, wisdom, and love?
Psalm 119:136 gives us a powerful picture of a heart transformed by God's truth:
“Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.”
Why would someone weep because others are not following God's ways? Perhaps because genuine spiritual maturity is not simply about knowing more. It's about learning to love more.
In this episode, we explore the connection between biblical truth, spiritual growth, compassion, and the heart of God. We also consider the danger of using truth as a weapon instead of allowing it to shape us into people who love others more deeply.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE EXPLORE:
The light of God's Word: How Scripture opens our eyes to truths we may have overlooked.
From knowledge to compassion: Why knowing about people's struggles is different from truly seeing them.
Seeing people differently: Moving beyond labels, assumptions, and quick judgments to recognise the person behind the behaviour.
Truth without love: Why biblical conviction should produce humility and compassion rather than pride and condemnation.
The heart of Jesus: Learning to notice, listen to, and care for the people others overlook.
The power of compassion: How our tears can become prayers, our concern can become action, and our love can become service.
YOUR CHALLENGE THIS WEEK: THE “SEE AGAIN” CHALLENGE
Think of one person you have become quick to judge, someone you have labelled, misunderstood, or perhaps given up on.
Pray this simple prayer:
“God, help me see this person the way You see them.”
Then take time to listen. Don't rush to fix, lecture, or prepare your response. Listen with compassion, remain wise about healthy boundaries, and ask God to show you how to respond in love.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
“Light doesn't only show you where to walk. Sometimes it shows you what you've stopped noticing.”
“A heart transformed by God eventually begins to care about what God cares about.”
“Conviction without compassion creates judgment. Truth with love creates transformation.”
“People stop being problems to solve when we learn to see them as people to love.”
Sometimes tears are not a sign of weakness. They are evidence that our hearts are becoming more sensitive to the things that matter to God.
The closer you get to God's heart, the harder it becomes not to care about what He cares about.
