Description
I recently had about 40 people apply to work with me.
Some were great. Some were fine. And some were honestly shocking.
The surprising part? It wasn't necessarily about their photography.
Some of the applicants were probably very talented photographers. But they didn't know how to apply for photography work.
In this episode of Beyond the Image, I break down what I saw and what photographers can do differently when they're trying to get hired, assist, collaborate, or land commercial work.
We talk about:
Why having a great portfolio isn't enough
The difference between showing your work and actually pitching yourself
How to write an email that gets opened and actually read
Why your subject line matters
How to make a pitch feel personal instead of like a mass email
Why you should research the person or company you're contacting
How to explain why you're relevant instead of just saying you're passionate
What information you should include in an application
Why sending five different portfolio links creates unnecessary friction
When Instagram works as a portfolio and when it doesn't
Why "I'd love to collaborate" isn't actually a pitch
How to talk about your skills when you don't have much experience
Why you shouldn't lead with what YOU need
How to follow up without becoming annoying
And the biggest mistake photographers make when trying to get hired
Your photography might get someone interested.
But your communication, professionalism, and ability to demonstrate how you can contribute are what can get you into the conversation.
If you want more photography work, you need to learn how to actually apply for it.
