The Word Became Flesh

Bible verses used in this episode: John 1:1-18 John 8:12 John 8:14 Outline: The Word and Creation (John 1:1-5) The Word and John the Baptist (John 1:6-9) The Word and the World (John 1:10-13) The Word and Us (John 1:14-18) Tips for teaching children: Light-Up Globe: Provide each child with a white ping-pong ball and a battery-operated tea light. Carefully make a small hole in the ball. Insert a pencil into the hole to hold the ball while children paint it to look like the earth. When the paint is dry, remove the pencil and place the ball over the plastic “flame” of the tea light. Turn on the light to make the globe glow, reminding us that Jesus is the Light of the World. Have children write “We are children of God” in the centre of a sheet of paper. Then invite them to draw children around the edges to create a border. Tips for teaching adults:  Read the text of John 1:1-18.  Divide the class into two groups.  Ask the first group to read John 1:1-5 and Genesis 1:1-5.  Ask the second group to read John 1:14-18 and Exodus 40:34-38.  Ask each group to discuss what points of comparison they see between the texts in John and Genesis and Exodus.  If time allows, gather back together and have each group report their findings.How does John draw upon Genesis and Exodus to explain who Jesus is?  Follow up with the questions: What is significant for you and why?  How does this challenge your life?
