The New Woman for David Miscavige | Where is Shelly Miscavige? (S1, E23)

Send us Fan Mail A person doesn’t just vanish for nearly two decades without a system helping it happen. We’re digging into the long-running question “Where is Shelly Miscavige?” with Rachel Hastings, a former Scientology film professional whose timeline overlaps the period before and after Shelly’s public disappearance in 2005. What Rachel describes isn’t gossip or trivia; it’s a window into how power, fear, and silence can be enforced inside the Sea Org and around David Miscavige’s inner circle. We talk about how Scientology’s “social betterment” campaigns can look like ordinary nonprofit media work, why the connection to Scientology is often hidden early on, and how love bombing can mask escalating control. Rachel explains what changed once she had “seniors,” structure, and ethics pressure: the sleep deprivation around Ideal Org openings, the constant threat of punishment, and the roller-coaster tactic of building people up only to tear them down. Her story of witnessing the “head on a pike” mindset shows how intimidation becomes culture, not an exception. Rachel also shares what she observed when Shelly was present at events and what it felt like when Shelly was suddenly no longer there. We contrast Shelly’s demeanor with the later rise of Larice “Lou” Stukenbrock into the communicator role, including the extreme image management around David Miscavige, the infamous “photo drill,” and why ordinary staff can’t even ask where the leader’s wife went. We close with the message Rachel would give Shelly today, and why we keep speaking publicly about a disappearance that Scientology still treats as off-limits.
