The Courage to Speak Up: Mental Health, Hope & Breaking Generational Silence | Nick, Frontline Collective
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Who looks after the people who spend their lives looking after everyone else? In this powerful and inspiring episode of Brave Everyday, I am joined by Nick, founder of Frontline Collective, who joins me from Australia. Nick has dedicated much of his adult life to some of the toughest and most emotionally demanding jobs imaginable. From serving as a police officer and weapons and tactics instructor to working in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, supporting vulnerable children living with complex trauma, working in prisons and responding to emergencies as a firefighter. Today, he continues his incredible work as a Health and Wellbeing Officer within an industrial emergency response team. These roles demand courage, resilience and compassion, but behind every uniform is a human being, often carrying experiences and challenges the rest of us never see. Nick opens up about his own mental health journey, overcoming adversity, workplace bullying, career changes and the importance of knowing when to put your own wellbeing first. After losing two people close to him to suicide, Nick recognised a gap in mental health support for frontline workers. Rather than waiting for someone else to act, he created a peer support programme to help emergency responders feel supported, understood and able to ask for help. Through Frontline Collective, Nick is now building a community, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging conversations that could make a life-changing difference. In this episode, we explore: The realities and emotional impact of frontline careers. Mental health, trauma, resilience and overcoming adversity. Workplace bullying and finding the courage to change direction. Suicide prevention, peer support and looking after those who protect us. Self-care, boundaries and rediscovering yourself beyond your career. Breaking generational patterns and finding the courage to express love. The importance of human connection, vulnerability and hope. One of the most moving moments comes when Nick shares how he found the courage to tell his grandfather and father that he loved them, changing the way love is expressed across generations of his family. It's a beautiful reminder that bravery isn't always about running towards danger. Sometimes it's about saying "I love you", "I'm struggling" or "I need help". And when I ask Nick what being brave means to him, his answer is incredibly powerful. Sometimes you don't need to see the whole road ahead. You just need enough hope to take the next step. This is a conversation about the extraordinary people behind the uniforms, the importance of supporting those who support us, and the difference one person can make. I hope it leaves you feeling inspired, understood and reminded that even the strongest people need support. Your story matters. Your voice matters. You matter.
