Charlie Kirk’s Final Interview | The Responsibility to Act

Two weeks after interviewing Charlie Kirk, Matthew Thayer and Joy Thayer learned of his death. What began as an interview for a documentary about modern prophecy became something far more personal—and brought new weight to the story they were trying to tell. In Episode 3 of Can You Hear Me Now?: The Conversation, Matthew and Joy share the story behind Charlie Kirk’s final interview and how his words shaped the documentary. In this episode, they discuss: Why Charlie Kirk was part of the film: How his perspective on faith, politics, and the separation of church and state connected to the documentary’s larger questions. The interview that took an unexpected turn: What stood out about Charlie’s answers, including his belief that prophecy is biblical and must be tested against Scripture. A message about faith and action: Why Charlie’s statement that a prophetic word is not an excuse for action or apathy became a defining idea in the film. Processing his death: How Matthew and Joy navigated grief, reconsidered their responsibility to the footage, and sought to handle his interview with care. Choosing the message over sensationalism: Why they kept the documentary focused on modern prophecy, Christian engagement, and critical thinking rather than speculation surrounding Charlie’s death. Matthew and Joy also explain how they reshaped the film after Charlie’s death while staying true to the story they originally set out to tell: asking whether God speaks today and encouraging viewers to examine the evidence, test what they hear against Scripture, and think critically for themselves.
