Description
“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.” - Proverbs 16:2
What if the thing everybody knows you for—the thing you’re exceptionally good at—isn’t actually centered in what most deeply motivates you?
I know this experience personally. I built a career, reputation, income, and leadership role around work I was highly competent at. While some parts of my work was very aligned with my primary motivational gift, significant parts of it required me to diminish that gift, center other gifts, and develop competence in ways that eventually became depleting.
That’s what I mean by forced competence.
High Responsibility Humans often become excellent at things because life required it. Professional demands, painful experiences, praise, necessity, responsibility, or simply seeing a gap no one else was filling lead them to develop significant competence.
Forced competence can serve us well, and even prepare us for future work. But being excellent at something does not tell us whether that way of working should be at the center of our contribution.
In this episode, I use my years as a nurse practitioner and graduate professor to show you what this looked like in my own life, including why a career that appeared closely aligned with my Professor gift still required me to operate in ways that created resistance and depletion.
In this episode, we dive into:
What a primary motivational gift is—and why it matters when ordering our other six motivational gifts
Why competence and calling can become tangled together
How “forced competence” develops through necessity, repetition, professional expectations, pain, and reward
Why success can make misalignment harder to recognize than failure
Why restlessness, resentment, exhaustion, or depletion are information—but not automatic proof that you need to leave your career
How internal fruit can help you discern what your external success cannot
Why intrinsic joy deserves a place in discernment without becoming the only criterion
A practical two-column exercise for comparing what you’re known for with the contribution that actually brings you alive
Here’s your question to consider this week after listening to this episode:
Where have you tangled up your competence with your calling—and what might God show you if you asked Him how He designed and wants to direct you?

Grow In Your Gifts™ begins October 21. Inside the program, we’ll move beyond gift identification to examine how all seven of your gifts are currently developed, diminished, distorted, and divinely directed—and how to order them around your primary motivational gift.
