Description

Mastané is a South Asian electronic music and live-performance duo formed by producer/DJ Asad Khan and violinist/composer Raaginder. Rooted in a shared Punjabi heritage, they blend classical tradition with modern electronic sound, moving between the meditative and the electric in a live show built for both listening and dancing. As solo artists, their music has been streamed millions of times and featured on Disney's Ms. Marvel. Together, they've sold out shows across North America and beyond, including Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, London and Los Angeles. This November, they bring the 333 Tour to Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver: three weekends, three cities and three distinct experiences, culminating in their largest show to date at Vancouver's PNE Forum. In this episode of Unplugged with T, host Tarannum Thind sits down with Asad Khan and Raaginder for a conversation that begins right after a private live set. They talk about what Mastané means, how the name came to them, and why they call their community Mastané Loke. They also explain why they want their music to be felt and not just heard, and how their song "Almost" brings together heavy bass, a folk-style violin melody and the rubab. The heart of the episode is the story of how two musicians found each other: Asad listening to Raaginder's music under the stars in the Sahara Desert and imagining a collaboration, then a stage in New York a year later, and a first real hangout where they discovered how similar their journeys had been. Alongside it runs the story of Asad's late start on the sitar, a chain of coincidences that led him to the instrument, and Raaginder's 17 years of training with his Guruji and the century-old violin she gave him. There's much more: the Guru-Shishya tradition and why being a student for life matters; Peshawari topi and turban as symbols of a united Punjabi heritage; how folk melodies, ghazals and classical ragas connect across a man-made border; how they choose songs and reimagine classics through reduction; the idea of freedom in art; softness and sensitivity in a Punjabi music scene often associated with aggression; staying independent of big labels; and the design behind the three-part 333 Tour.👉 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3m5BS-yZ7humunn6-Gwoiw?sub_confirmation=1Watch Other Podcasts By Tarannum Thind -Homecoming With Homeland - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwwDKSbQCA-QUnctrlrhIkpTmfarhtNcSChait With T - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwwDKSbQCA-QbbytbnvZGQtF-pCEQSzLEFollow us:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tarannumthindFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tarannum.thindYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tarannumthind
