CIO Podcast - Episode 122: C-Suite Executive Roles with Saad Chaudhry
For the 122nd episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we are joined by Saad Chaudhry, CEO at Evergreen Healthcare Partners, and former CIO, to talk about the roles of C-suite executives! We kick this episode off by discussing what went into Chaudhry’s decision to move from being an IT leader at a provider organization to now being the CEO at Evergreen. Next, we debate why we think more CIOs don’t become CEOs. Then, Chaudhry shares how what keeps him up at night has changed as he transitioned from a CDIO of a large health system to a CEO of a commercial business. We then use this transition to our advantage. CIOs often say they’re the business leaders who happen to lead tech. Since Chaudhry has gone from the outside perspective to being the subject of that belief, we dig into whether or not he still believes that to be true. Next, we talk about what Chaudhry was hesitant to say when he was a CIO that he’s willing to share more openly now. Then, we take a look at the recent Epic UGM to get Chaudhry’s and Evergreen’s reactions. We also discuss the challenges CIOs face and how they should be managing them. Next, we dig into where Chaudhry thinks CIOs should be investing in managed services and when it makes sense to keep things in-house. Lastly, we wrap this episode up with Chaudhry giving his advice to CIOs today. Here’s a look at the questions and topics (inspired by the suggestions of Sarah Hatchett, CIO at Cleveland Clinic, and Shakeeb Akhter, CDO at Memorial Sloan Kettering) we discuss in this episode: What went into your decision to move from being an IT leader at a provider organization to now being CEO at Evergreen? Why do more CIOs not become CEOs? How has what keeps you up at night changed as you transition from a CDIO of a large health system to a CEO of a commercial business? CIOs often say they’re business leaders who happen to lead tech. Now that you’re actually running a business, do you still believe that? What’s something you were maybe hesitant to say when you were CIO that you’re willing to share more openly now? What’s your and Evergreen’s reaction coming out of the recent Epic UGM? What are the challenges CIOs face, and how should they be managing them? Where do you think CIOs should be investing in managed services, and when does it make sense to keep things in-house? What advice would you give to a CIO today? Now, without further ado, we’re excited to share with you the next episode of the CIO Podcast by Healthcare IT Today. CIO Podcast - Episode 121: AI Tools and Behavioral Health with Patrick Williamson
For the 121st episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we are joined by Patrick Williamson, Chief Information Officer at Array Behavioral Care, to talk about AI tools and behavioral health! We kick this episode off by discussing why AI governance and security are so critical and different in healthcare and behavioral health. Then we learn how Williamson has been approaching vetting solutions in his organization and why it’s so hard to say no to a solution. Next, we dig into Williamson’s thoughts on using PHI on ungoverned AI tools. We also see if there are any that clear HIPAA, as well as what it would take to do so. Then we talk about some of the initial applications in behavioral health where AI tools make sense. Next, we analyze the value of behavioral health having visibility into the patient’s full medical record. We then debate over whether we need more AI or if we just need to leverage the tools we already have. Lastly, we conclude this episode with Williamson giving advice to aspiring CIOs who are considering a behavioral health organization. Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss in this episode: Why is AI governance and security so critical, and even different in healthcare, and specifically behavioral health? How are you approaching vetting solutions in your organization? Why is it so hard to say no to a solution? What are your thoughts on using PHI on ungoverned AI tools? Are there any that clear HIPAA and what does that take? What are some of the initial applications in behavioral health where AI tools make sense? What’s the value of behavioral health having visibility into the patient’s full medical record? Do we need more AI, or do we need to leverage the tools we already have? What advice would you give an aspiring CIO who is considering a behavioral health organization? CIO Podcast - Episode 120: Healthcare Education and Training with Stephanie Lahr
For the 120th episode of the CIO podcast hosted by Healthcare IT Today, we are joined by Stephanie Lahr, MD, CMO at uPerform, and Former CIO, to talk about healthcare education and training! We kick this episode off by talking about why we think education often gets treated as an afterthought by leadership during major health IT initiatives, as well as the implications of that mindset. Then Lahr shares how she would convince a room of health system executives that education deserves a seat at the strategy table, not just the support desk. Next, we debate if memorization is the right goal for training, and if not, what should organizations be optimizing for with their training instead. Personalization is a constant topic in conversations about adoption. Going from that, we discuss why, at a high level, one-size-fits-all education falls short and how organizations should be personalizing their education. Next, we dive into another hypothetical scenario. We discuss what would be the first thing Lahr would advise a health system leadership team undergoing a major transformation to get right when it comes to preparing their people. Lastly, Lahr shares the best piece of advice she’s been given in her career. Here’s a look at the questions and topics we discuss in this episode: When you look at major health IT initiatives, training often isn’t the first thing leadership thinks about. Why do you think education gets treated as an afterthought, and what are the implications of that mindset? If you had to convince a room of health system executives that education deserves a seat at the strategy table, not just the support desk, how would you make that case? Is memorization the right goal for training, or what should organizations actually be optimizing for with their training instead? Personalization comes up constantly in conversations about adoption. At a high level, why does one-size-fits-all education fall short, and how should organizations be personalizing their education? If you were advising a health system leadership team about undergoing a major transformation, what’s the first thing you’d tell them to get right when it comes to preparing their people? What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career? Now, without further ado, we’re excited to share with you the next episode of the CIO Podcast by Healthcare IT Today.
