Description
You read something smart from somebody you respect, somebody with a real community who's very confident about it. So you go do it. And it does nothing, or it actively makes things worse. And you assume you executed it badly, or that you're missing something, or that it works for everyone except you. Here's what actually happened: that advice was correct, for a community of two thousand people. And you have forty. Almost nobody puts a size on their advice. They just say what worked, and it did work, at the size they were when they figured it out.
A community at ten members and a community at a thousand aren't the same thing scaled up and down. They're different animals that need completely different handling. This one walks through what actually changes as you grow, and the thing you have to give up every single time to get to the next stage.
In this episode:
Why the move that gets you to the next stage usually means quitting something that's currently working
The first ten: why "it's all me" isn't a failure, and the superpower you'll never get back
Ten to a hundred: the shift from hub-and-spoke to members talking to each other, and what breaks if you skip it
A hundred to a thousand: what replaces your personal attention when you can't know everyone anymore
Over a thousand: why it stops being one room, and how your role changes
The two ways people get this wrong, and which one you're probably doing
The one question to ask this week: what am I doing that belongs to a different stage?

🎙️ LAST CALL FOR EPISODE 100
Next week is one hundred, and I'm answering your questions instead of doing a clip show. Send me anything: what you're stuck on, the thing you've always wanted to ask, the money side, the tired side. Voice memos are my favorite, since hearing you ask it in your own words beats me reading it off a page. Typed is fine too. Link's below, and I need it in the next day or two.
