061 | GT350, AMG Wagon & the Lost Art of Driving — with Viraj
What makes a car truly special? Is it horsepower? Speed? The badge on the hood? Or is it the way a car makes you feel when you’re actually behind the wheel? On this episode of Cool Cars with Chris, Chris and Courage sit down with Viraj — a lifelong car enthusiast with a garage that perfectly represents two very different sides of performance driving: a high-revving Shelby GT350 and a brutally fast Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon. Viraj’s story starts long before either of those cars. Growing up in London, his early obsession with cars led him to a Saab 9000 Turbo, followed by cars like the Lancia Delta Integrale and firsthand experiences around the legendary Group B rally era. He shares what it was like being close enough to those rally cars to hear them coming through the forest, feel the dust and heat, and experience a kind of motorsport connection that’s almost impossible to recreate today. The conversation eventually makes its way to Southern California and Angeles Crest Highway, where Viraj talks about Newcomb’s Ranch, the Good Vibes Breakfast Club, the incredible variety of cars you can find there, and even meeting Jay Leno after he arrived in a historically raced Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing. Then the guys dig into Viraj’s current cars. His Shelby GT350 is all about involvement: a manual transmission, naturally aspirated Voodoo V8 and an 8,250-rpm redline that rewards the driver for working the car. On the other side is his Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon — a 603-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 wagon that can deliver enormous torque almost instantly while still carrying dogs, bikes and everything else a daily driver needs. That leads into one of the biggest debates in car culture: factory engineering versus modifying your car. Viraj explains why he prefers learning the car as it was engineered instead of immediately chasing more power. The guys talk about how modifications can improve one part of a car while compromising another, how unfinished builds turn into expensive money pits, and why driver skill often matters far more than what the spec sheet says. 060 | Cars & Coffee at a Winery: JDM Finds & Why Nissan Should Bring Back the 240SX
Cars & Coffee at a winery? That’s exactly where Courage from The Real Driven Dad spent the day, surrounded by everything from JDM favorites and tuned builds to exotics, convertibles and plenty of unexpected finds. In this episode, Chris and Courage break down the cars that stood out most, including a clean imported Nissan 180SX with an SR20DET that sparks a bigger conversation: why doesn’t Nissan bring back an affordable, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car like the 240SX? From there, the conversation goes everywhere car people love to go—AWD vs. RWD, affordable performance cars, modified BMWs, engine swaps, rebuilding wrecked exotics, 3D-printed car parts, retro styling and some of the strangest automotive ideas of the early 2000s. They also get into Plymouth Prowlers, PT Cruisers, the Chevy SSR, Mustang vs. Camaro vs. Challenger, and why sometimes the coolest car is simply the one you actually enjoy driving. Plus, Chris and Courage somehow end up debating what your car says about what you probably drink. Chris and Courage break down the Roadster’s supercar styling, proposed three-motor all-wheel-drive setup, instant EV torque, and the technology that allows electric cars to put enormous amounts of power to the pavement. Then comes the big question: could Tesla really demonstrate a Roadster that actually hovers? They also debate whether ultra-fast EV sports cars make sense when electric SUVs and trucks can already deliver ridiculous acceleration while offering far more practicality. And what happens when yesterday’s performance bargains become tomorrow’s collectibles? The guys get into rising Nissan GT-R prices, the Ford GT, supercar values, and why some enthusiast cars become incredibly expensive after production ends. Plus: why charging an EV or your phone to 100% isn't always ideal, four-motor vs. three-motor EVs, Tesla styling, BYD, Lucid, Rivian, the realities of 0–60 performance in everyday traffic, and plenty of classic Cool Cars with Chris tangents along the way. In this episode: Tesla Roadster, Tesla EVs, electric sports cars, EV supercars, Tesla Roadster rumors, EV performance, electric car acceleration, EV battery charging, three-motor vs. four-motor EVs, Rivian, Lucid, BYD, Nissan GT-R values, Ford GT, collectible cars, sports cars, supercars, car technology, and the future of electric vehicles. 058 | A Datsun 510 Fell Into His Lap — Now What?
Courage may have just found the kind of project car you don’t go looking for — the kind that finds you. In this episode of Cool Cars with Chris, Chris sits down with Courage from The Real Driven Dad to talk car culture, local meets, classic Volkswagens, and the possibility of taking on a 1969 Datsun 510 that has been sitting for years. The conversation starts with a question every car person understands: how much of your weekend gets planned around cars? Chris and Courage get into Cars & Coffee culture, why enthusiasts will happily take the long way just for a better drive, and the appeal of getting out to local events even when life and family make scheduling tricky. Then Courage shares what he saw at a local Volkswagen meet — including classic Beetles, dune buggies, and one seriously wild off-road Beetle build with a twin-turbo LS engine hanging out back. But the real story begins when Courage reveals a possible new project. A friend has a 1969 Datsun 510 that has been sitting for roughly a decade. It’s already been modified with an SR20 drivetrain, but this isn’t a car that’s ready to fire up and drive home. Courage talks through what taking it on would really mean: garage space, tires, mechanical work, engine work, interior pieces, sourcing parts, and potentially spending a year and a half to two years just getting it to the point where he feels comfortable driving it. That raises the bigger question: When a project car falls into your lap, how do you know whether to walk away — or say yes? Chris and Courage also talk about keeping the character of an old Datsun, whether an LS swap would be too much, what a lightweight 510 with an SR20 could be like, and whether the entire build could become its own YouTube series. And yes, the project may already have a name: Project Nickel and Dime. In this episode: How car people plan weekends around meets and events Why sometimes the longer route is the better route Cars & Coffee culture and local car communities Classic VW Beetles, dune buggies, and a wild off-road build A twin-turbo LS-powered Volkswagen Beetle Courage’s potential 1969 Datsun 510 project The SR20 drivetrain already in the car What happens when a project has been sitting for years Garage space, rollers, towing, and project-car logistics Keeping the personality of a classic Japanese car SR20 vs. V8/LS swap ideas How long a real garage build can actually take Building a car instead of simply paying someone else to finish it Turning the project into content for YouTube The people and relationships that come from car culture The origin of Project Nickel and Dime Would you take on a project like this, or is this exactly the kind of car that can spiral into years of work?
