SEP 30, 202642 MIN

Description

As an artist and scholar, Camille reimagines Black memory and the passage of time. She excavates hidden stories that permeate her own feelings of otherness. Leading to her famous alter ego known as Miss Canadiana. An Ambassador for Canada's mythical sense of multiculturalism. Allowing space to consider the meaning of being a Canadian individual.  A hometown beauty queen for Hamilton, Canada, being Jamaican, raised mainly in Canada, she has never felt Canadian. Turner's immersive exhibitions continue to broadly explore Canada’s entanglement in the transatlantic trade of enslaved Africans.  Examining Black diasporic memory, futurity, and afterlives of the enslaved has created and transformed audiences that have witnessed her interdisciplinary works.  Join me as we discuss the memories, stories, and people that are part of our collective histories as Canadians. Camille Turner's portrayal of her Afronautic Lab, as well as different exhibitions, including the simulated advertisements of escaped slaves, explores the complexities of people and families who grew up in the areas she did, and what they experienced during their lifetimes.
