264 - Leading With Intent - Empowering without Chaos

Stop asking for permission. But don’t beg for forgiveness either. There’s a third way: sharing intent. In this episode of Culture Bites, Dominic Gourley explores an idea from David Marquet’s book Turn the Ship Around! that challenges how leaders think about empowerment. Rather than asking “Can I do this?”, what if people said “I intend to do this, because…”? It’s a small shift in language that encourages people to think for themselves, take ownership and make better decisions, while keeping leaders informed. But empowerment doesn't happen just because we tell people they're empowered. Leaders need to build two things: clarity and competence.
