Take Ownership: If You Want Something to Change, Start With You

Description

It's really freaking easy to see what everyone else is doing wrong. Your spouse needs to communicate differently. Your kids need to stop reacting that way. Your employee needs to step up. Your client needs to change. Someone else needs to... fill in the blank. But recently, I caught myself doing exactly that. We were sitting around the dinner table when my oldest daughter immediately became defensive over a comment. And my first instinct? To look at her reaction. But later that night, I started asking a much harder question: How am I part of the problem—or part of the solution? Taking ownership_transcript_202… Taking ownership_transcript_202… And if I'm being truthful... I found some things I didn't necessarily want to find. 😂 Sarcasm. Quick little retorts. The desire to retaliate when someone says something snarky. Tiny interactions that may be contributing to the exact defensiveness I was noticing in someone else. And I realized: If I want something different in my family, I have to be willing to lead differently first. Not lecture everyone else into changing. Not point out everything they're doing wrong. Start with me. In this episode, we're talking about taking ownership, slowing down our reactions, leading through our own behavior, and recognizing how much influence we actually have when we stop waiting for everyone else to change first. Because sometimes the question isn't: "Why are they doing this?" It's: "How am I contributing to this dynamic—and what can I do differently?" Episode Breakdown (7+ minutes) 00:00 – 00:54 — The dinner-table moment that started this conversation 00:54 – 01:49 — Why it's so easy to blame something outside ourselves 01:49 – 02:28 — A conversation with a friend and looking at our own role in the problem 02:28 – 03:15 — My immediate reaction: "It's not my fault" 😂 03:15 – 04:02 — Sarcasm, retaliation, and recognizing the dynamic I may be helping create 04:02 – 04:44 — Catching myself before retaliating with my husband 04:44 – 05:29 — Be the change first and watch for the ripple effect 05:29 – 06:25 — How much influence we have without necessarily seeing it 06:25 – 07:09 — Victim vs. victor: becoming part of the solution 07:09 – 07:45 — Taking ownership so you can actually move forward Key Takeaways It's much easier to identify what someone else should change than to examine our own role in the dynamic. Taking ownership does not require blaming yourself for everything. A more useful question is: How am I part of the problem or part of the solution? If you want someone else to become less reactive, start by examining your own reactions. Tiny behavioral shifts can create ripple effects throughout relationships. You don't have to wait for someone else to change before changing your contribution to the dynamic. Change doesn't happen overnight; you're allowed to be a work in progress. How you lead yourself influences how you show up everywhere else. You may never fully know the impact your behavior, words, or example has on other people. Ownership gives you somewhere to go next because it returns your attention to what you can actually change. You summed the episode up perfectly: "If I lead, the world will absolutely respond. So how am I leading myself in a way that I want the rest of the world to respond to?" Taking ownership_transcript_202… The Question to Ask Yourself The next time you find yourself thinking: They need to stop... They should... If only they would... This would be better if they... Try asking: "How am I part of the problem or part of the solution?" You might discover that there's nothing you need to change. But you might also notice a reaction, behavior, assumption, boundary, communication pattern, or energy that you do have control over. And that's powerful. Because you don't have to wait for someone else before you can begin creating change. Ready to Go Deeper? One of my favorite things to do with my private clients is slow situations down enough to see what's actually happening underneath them. Not: Whose fault is this? But: What do you actually have the power to change here? Because when we find THAT, we can start creating a completely different ripple effect.
